Aug 2004: (330 ml bottle, bought in Denmark). I knew Carlsberg added pure refined sugar syrup to this beer (it’s on the label), and that made me sceptical and maybe a little prejudiced even before opening the bottle. Beautiful copper colour, moderate head. Aroma has a nice maltiness which unfortunately is overwhelmed by sugary and syrupy notes. Flavour is not quite as sweet as I feared, still something is wrong: the syrup, no doubt.
To think that Carlsberg actually retired Tuborg Rød and introduced THIS in stead ..... Idiots!

Special release for "Beer Test 2003" in Denmark so the brewery could decide which new beer to bring to the market...

Appearance: light brown/mahogany, brilliant clarity, lots of clinging bubbles on a hard pour, one-finger off-white head slowly flattens out, some lacing

Aroma: initial roasty/caramel malt hit followed by a mellow graininess and some continental hop, hint of chocolate

Flavor: slight sweetness off-set by some roast flavor and the typical Carlsberg hop-bite/flavor, caramel hits at the very front but is quickly swiped, slight acidity, dry minerally finish

Mouthfeel: medium-light body, crisp carbonation, mineral astringency, some alcohol warmth

Overall Impression: Most Carlsberg beers are rather strongly bittered, but this one showed some restraint. A pretty standard dark lager, but nothing that stands out. Like Beck's Dark. The label says, "Dark in color, round and strong in flavor." It doesn't hold to that too strictly, I'd say.
