A Danish pilsner. First brewed in 1847 in Copenhagen. Full-bodied, crisp, and refreshing with a distinctive hoppy aroma.

Watching Spain celebrate it's victory at the 2008 European Cup Championship, I thought I'd toast them with the tournament's most advertised sponsor - Carlsberg.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, this one is scantily worth 16 or so, maybe. A clear golden yellow body with paper thin trim and the odd few bubbles that float by. A rare instance where the bottle is better looking than the beer.

The aroma is sweet with adjuncts. I almost mistook the corn for softer orchard fruits (pears, apples) but no, this is pure corn. I don't think there is anything in this aroma that anyone could find enticing.

The corn is not so pungent in flavour although the body is gassy, damp, and cloying. In fact, an argument could be made that there really is no flavour, a nearly tasteless fluid that passes over the palate and simply falls down the throat. I'd bet that's the idea actually. Too bad it's not at least refreshing.

For some time Carlsberg's slogan was "probably the best beer in the world". Still now, after trying it, I have no clue where they get that idea from. These things may be subjective but if you ask me, this is not even close!

Presentation: 11.2 ounce bottle poured into a pint glass. Purchased from a local liquor store.

Look: bright golden color. 2 finger foam head that evaporates rather quickly. Moderate amount of lacing.

Smell: floral hops, herbs, grains, and malt.

Taste: similar to the smell, floral hops, herbs, grains, and malt. It has a subtle aftertaste that’s similar to mineral water. It has more hops flavor than I expected.

Feel: light bodied. Bubbly and slightly creamy mouthfeel. Carbonation is slightly above average.

Overall: as mass produced European lagers go, it is quite good. It’s flavorful and yet still very drinkable. You can really taste the hops without it being overly bitter. This beer is quite popular in Europe, but somehow it is relatively rare in the United States for some reason. I would definitely buy it again, and it is worth trying if you run across it.

Haven’t had this in a very long time and forgot what it tasted like. I was worried it might taste like Heineken. But… no. It’s a pleasantly solid normal beer. The hops are somewhat generically bitter, but have a bit of pepper/herbal/pine flavor. Slight green apple and toasty cracker. Slightly sweeter than I prefer. Pretty clean. There is a bit of cheap
Heineken-esque flavor. It’s subtle. I noticed it while trying Carlsberg side-by-side with Modelo. Carlsberg does not quite meet the baseline standard of Modelo.

Carlsberg is a beer I can safely say is one of my favorites, even though there are better beers out there. Want a beer but don't know which one? Carlsberg! And there are plenty of times when Carlsberg is exactly what I want, too. Cheers!

Poured from a can into a pint glass. Pours straw yellow orange with a small white head. Smells of sweet grain with not much else. Tastes of sweet grain, not much else. Beer is light bodied and easy drinking, good carbonation. Overall, an average beer.

At my lady Pamela's house; canned and chilled, 473mL in a pint glass. From my favourite LCBO at Tecumseh Mall in nearby Windsor. Best before April 22/26. My third beer from the Copenhagen, Denmark brewery, and for 2025. With Gracie the cat...

Can notes: Pioneers of Purity: We Danes aren't keen on keeping secrets, so in 1883, when we discovered how to purify yeast for better beer, our founder shared this knowledge freely with other brewers, which means every good beer in the world probably has a bit of our know-how in it.
