(From notes) Had it on tap during recent Portland visit. It has a nice dark brown red with a thin head and lacing. A fruity smell. Taste is of caramel, fruit, toffee, and roasted malt. A slightly bitter finish. Good beer.

It appears dark Red in color with a small light tan head.
It smells slightly fruity, floral and molasses/ caramel like.
It tastes initially toasty and a bit of caramel and molasses. A subdued fruity flavor is also noticeable. There is also a floral hoppy flavor. The beer finishes with a subdued hoppy bitter flavor. A pretty nice standard red ale.
The carbonation is around medium.
The drinkability is pretty good the beer is very smooth and well balanced so it is easy to drink.
Overall a very nice red ale. It is nothing crazy but it is a very solid beer.

Mr. Toad's Wild Red was served in a standard pint. The beer is a dark garnet with a beige head. Fantastic lace.
Nose of caramel malts, citrus and fresh bread.
A nicely bitter red with some caramel sweetness for balance. Earthy with some substance. I liked the extra hopping in this one; they add a good citrus bite.
Slightly thick mouth with enough complexity to session. Well done Mr. Toad!!

Said to be both their first and best-selling beer, Mr. Toads is a turbid, chestnut colored ale brewed with either five malts and three hops or three malts and two hops, depending on which source you listen to. Either way, the malts are abundant and are artfully offset by a yeasty tang and coolly reserved bittering. The result is distinctive and appealing though my serving was marred by a tired tap. My rating therefore reflects a fine beer diminished by a lack of freshness a recurrent problem at Old Market where as many as 15 house beers are available and the clientele often fail to fully appreciate their value.
