This is an English IPA, as the vessel on the bottle also suggests. Cannot really make up my mind if I liked it or not - for an English IPA it was too hoppy but for a hoppy IPA it was too bitter. One thing for sure, it did not really work until letting it warm up to near room temperature, until then it felt very thin and diluted. Overall it was an okay, acceptable IPA but not something I would want to drink again.

November 17th, 2016 - The first IPA to come from the Kirkland German beer advent calendar is the Rieder Pale. A darker auburn in color, it features a milder and more bashful aroma that I don't think I'd ever confuse for an IPA if given a blind smelling. It's slightly sweet, with a dash of almond or marzipan, and an even lighter touch of corn meal. A nice blend or smells, but nothing pale or hoppy about it. The flavor is more of the same, and slightly sticky which works well with the sweeter elements.

$ 2.50 (Including tax)/500 mL can ($0.148/oz) from Costco, Schertz, TX. Part of the Costco 2019 Advent Calendar. Reviewed 11/15/19.
Can dated “EXP 05/2021”. Stored on the shelf at the store, stored at home at 42 degrees and served at 55 degrees in a hand washed and dried Imperial pint glass.
Appearance – 4.25.
First pour – Yellow, slight haze.
Body – Light orange, hazy.
Head – Large (Maximum 14 cm, stabilizing at five cm, aggressive center pour), off white, meringue-like, good retention, diminishing to a five mm crown which blends into the lacing, and a thick complete cap. Large amount of torn curtain lacing remains as the head retracts. Second pour leaves three-dimensional lumps of lacing that eventually slide into the liquid.
Lacing – Excellent - see above.
Aroma – 3.5 – Very fruity malty aroma.
Flavor – 3.5 – Begins moderately bitter with a light pear/apple fruitiness followed by a touch of caramel. Ends with virtually no bitterness but is sparsely chalky. No alcohol (6 % ABV as marked on the can) flavor or aroma, no diacetyl, no dimethylsulfide.
Palate – 3 – Medium, watery, soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 3.5 Taste is intriguing – not particularly appetizing but just odd enough to make me keep sipping – novelty vs goodness. One of the better cans from this box.

CAN: 500ml pull-tab with a green label. Nabbed from Costco as part of their Beer Advent Calendar 24-pack for $60 USD plus tax.
"India Pale Ale." 6.00% ABV. Brewed by Privatbrauerei H. Egerer.
Coating and bitter, with scrapey pithy resins and acidic citrusy grapefruit notes (especially in the aftertaste). The finish does bend a bit soapy to its detriment. Somewhat dry for an IPA, but soft enough and still smooth despite its scraping dragging mouthfeel.
Candied orange. Pale malt. Creamsicle.
A bitter IPA with a fruity but not juicy hop profile that nods towards old English tradition instead of the increasingly dominant U.S./Australian approach to the style. Unfortunately, it lacks depth of hop flavour and fails to showcase any individual hop varietal well, but it's drinkable and enjoyable for what it is.
The kind of middle-of-the-road English IPA that would have been a contender 20 years ago.

Appearance: Cloudy golden orange, with a large, very dense, fine-beaded off-white head with superb retention. Belgian-style lacing decorates the glass wall. Streams of fine-beaded and fast-rising carbonation are visible before a strong light.
Aroma; Moderate grapefruit and pine hops dominate the aroma, there is a pronounced undercurrent of white bread and a hint of crackers, as well
Taste: Opens with Moderate citric and pine hops, with a strong undercurrent of bready malt, with a harmonious balance between the two. There are also toasted malt notes, subtle, but present, nonetheless. As the taste progresses, the hops are ascendant, all citrus, more bitter orange than grapefruit and restrained pine. Finishes with sweet malt and a lingering, moderately bitter note.
Mouth feel: Rich, and very full, very soft and pleasant, with just a whisper of carbonation.
Drinkability/notes: The IPA style is not a particular favorite of mine, but I really like this one. It is wonderfully balanced between hops and malt. If you have the chance to try it, don't pass it up.
Presentation: Packaged in a 500 ml, 16.9 ounce steel can, served in a South American-style Pilsener glass. Beer number nineteen (December 19th) from the 2017 Costco Advent Beer Calendar.

Pours murky and spotted with coagulated proteins but with an ample eggshell head. Smells like caramelized onions, blood orange and decaying pine. Taste is bitter and very vegetal. Carbonation and mouthfeel is fine. Something is wrong here. It’s from the Adventist’s hasn’t been in my possession long but maybe fell off the truck somewhere before making it in my box. I hope that’s the case, orherwise this is an awful

I kind of thought this one would fall down, and it did. The unknown months in the can have hurt this one.
It pours a deep, cloudy light brown. It looks funky and scary, but I like that. There is load of lacing too. The aroma is a funkfest. Malts from who-knows-where mashing around in a can. It doesn't get any better until it leaves a bitter aftertaste laced with metallic funk.
Not recommended.
PS 11-26-2020 With a much fresher sample it is more palatable. You can actually taste the ale instead of the can. Pretty bitter (especially the aftertaste) with not much malt to balance. I wonder what it would be like truly fresh (because this is still too old for the style).
