a unique blend of an imperial stout with a bourbon barrel aged porter. im not sure exactly how they do this one, but i assume either the stout is barrel aged too, or that the whole thing is barrel aged post blend, hence the double barrel name. its a cool beer, a little thin for me, slightly tannic from the oak, but with a ton of flavor and not too heavy to drink a couple of pours of, unique for a beer this barrel forward and flavorful. it looks like a big stout in the glass, near black and medium gloss, with a full inch of off white head and nice lace. it smells like whiskey, almost before it smells like beer, vanilla and fusel alcohol and charcoal, then the chocolate notes in the malt and the roast, subtle coffee and maple here, traces of a bready ale yeast, good complexity, warming and inviting. the flavor is good but i do get that light tannic thing first which to me breaks it all down a little bit. nice whiskey and oak flavor here though, forward because of the lighter beer in the blend, still a little alcohol and quite a bit of sugar showing, but its smooth enough and has round edges, hefty roast from the stout component underneath, and a neat cola or rootbeer sort of middle. flavorful beer, a neat blend, not quite all the way dialed in on the barrel side of things for my tastes, but a tasty and ambitious brew from these guys!
