Zettler Pils Classic
"vom fass"/on tap for €3,60 at Cafe Central, Wein
This is a Czech Pilsner brewed by the Brauerei Zwettl Karl Schwarz GmbH in the Austrian town of Zwettl, less than 25 km/15 miles from the Czech border in the north of Austria. The town is more known for their abbey, but at least secondly for their brewery which dates to 1708, and has been family owned since 1890. The Pils Classic is only available "vom fass" as it is not bottled.
Notes: Crystal-clear straw-gold body beneath a full head of bright white froth. The head retention and lacing are exceptional. The aroma is of soft malt with a waft of floral hops floating across it. The hops are fuller in the flavor, adding a bit of grassiness to the already present flowers. The malt is a firm, sweetish pilsner malt that's wrapped around a stiff backbone of bitterness that paints a wide swath in the finish and aftertaste. Medium to medium-light in body; crisp yet smooth. Superbly balanced. Remarkably clean and fresh. Each of the components clearly stands out on its own, and yet they also fall together as one.
