Well I just had to buy this because it’s a Hubertus. Hubertus had been the cr@p Eastern-European equivalent of Jagermeister, luckily I’ve only had it once or twice.
This beer was nothing like the namesake: it is a decent marzen, not too sweet, pleasant to drink. While chilled the hop aroma and the smooth taste were a little subdued but very soon it reached its optimal state and left nothing to complain about. Had better marzens of course but had worse too. Might go for it again.

Eh.

Rich golden color, lightly carbonated, lots of head. Lots of lace. Aroma is sweet and biscuity but flavor is overly sweet. Sweet bready malt with no hop balance. Not good. Two beers when eating at a restaurant is usually my standard. This evening I only had one.

Theres much better beer in Austria than this one.

Picked up in a Vienna grocery store, the standard brown 1/2 liter bottle features a green and silver label with a large-antlered deer head and a Christian cross between the points. Ingredients conform to the purity law. Best before 4/18/08, I opened it on 2/9/08.

Pours a clear pale gold under a one finger white head that quickly starts showing large air bubbles on top as it fades at a measured pace to thick film and collar. Strong malted grain nose with a hint of metal. The mouth is fairly heavy, slightly sticky and mildly prickly. Pleasant bready malt taste to open, with a touch of sweetness. A rather mettallic hops presence emerges a bit later, not exactly bitter, not exactly dry, but somehow tinny. The malt never fully succombs to this less than pleasant tone, but the metal makes the whole thing just slightly uncomfortable. Not bad, but there are many better Austrian versions of the style.
