Picked up at the Julius Meinl grocery store in the heart of Vienna, the stubby brown 33cl bottle features silver foil around the neck and a dark green label with a deer head above the name. The back label of my bottle features a quote from German author Friedrich Dürrenmatt: "The rulers should be watched, not the ruled." True, so true. The label says it is brewed in conformance with the purity law. Best before 5/14/08, I opened it on 1/20/08.
Pours a clear gold under a ½ finger white head that fades quickly to film, leaving a few spots on the side. There is a strong malt nose with a note of honey. The mouth is fairly heavy and syrupy, with plenty of prickly carbonation. Lots of grain comprise the opening, accompanied by a touch of honey (or sucrose). The hops are mild and well hidden, emerging only late as a bit of a tickle at the back of the throat. That tickle turns dry in the aftertaste, but doesn't last long (enough). Nothing spectacular here, but a solid product.
