Cask version at Barleys 4th Annual Mini RAF (05/13/06): Another year, another good Doppelbock from GLBC. Dark honey color with a thin light beige head that retains pretty well. Thin spotty lacing. Malty, nutty aroma with some dark fruit. Medium-bodied with a hoppy and nutty character, along with a good malt backbone. Some caramel and coffee in the background as well. The finish is sweet and malty. Enjoyable.

Had the pleasure of sampling this at Barley's Smokehouse Third Annual Mini-RAF. This is one that I was looking forward to and it did not disappoint...
Appearance: Crystal clear ruby edges that fade to a hazy brown middle. A pillowy fluffy ivory head develops and retains well.
Smell: A little light in this department...carmel, candied fruits, and a slight boozy smell round out the nose. Very complex and malt-driven.
Taste: Plums, carmel, maple syrup, and a mild alcohol backbone that blend well together. Very complex and heading toward the cloying end of the spectrum but it's good enough that it never quite gets there.
Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied and coats the palate well. Nice aftertaste of carmel and light alcohol that remains after each taste.
Drinkability: Suffers some due to the sweetness. I can't imagine this being a session but that's the case for me with most doublebocks.
This is another solid offering from one of my favorite breweries. Strongly recommended.

Imagine the collective surprise from AKSmokedPorter, Blatzman, TwelveVoltMan, and myself when we arrived (11:30 sharp) for the opening of Great Lakes Brewing Company on Cleveland's Opening Day this past Monday (they lost, unfortunately). A new beer? Why...I do believe a pint is in order!
Per the description on the beer sheet: "Deep mahogany color and rich, malty character, balanced by mild hops."
Sure enough...deep mahogany in color. Wonderfuly thick layer of sticky, tan-colored lace. Lots of malt in the nose, with only a brief breeze of hops to support this sugary avalanche assaulting the olfactories. As you would expect, lots of sweet malt in the flavor, too. All sorts of caramel flavors roll across the palate. Where art thou, oh hoppy bitterness? He shows up at the end just before the warming ABV arrives onstage to close out with a flourish. Hefty-thick mouthfeel here but drinkability is not as high as expected. Good, but not very high on my personal GLBC favorites list.
