5/10/2012

Best by date of September 7, 2012 on the bottle.

A: Dark ruby brown in color with a long standing inch of reddish beige foam. Great color and nice clarity.

S: Robust toastiness with pervasive melanoidins. Bready notes blend with light caramel and chocolate notes. Dark fruits linger in the background, redolent of prune and plum.

T: Rich toasted malt with traces of caramel and strong melanoidins. Fruitiness is restrained and reminiscent of plum, raisin, and grape. There's a low bitterness. Alcohol is well hidden in the smooth, clean, malt rich finish.

M: Upper medium to lower full body with lower moderate carbonation and a smooth, sticky mouthfeel.

Overall: A really nice Doppelbock.

Even though the site says that this beer is retired, it definitely is not. There's no brewing date on the bottle, but the "best by" date is 08/06/2011 (so June 8th as the Europeans reckon it)

A: Dark brown with a reddish tint at the edges. What little head there is is slightly offwhite with zero retention and only a little bit of lacing.

S: Deep malt smell. Nice and roasty, with a beautiful aroma of molasses. Also some chocolate in there. Very rich smelling.

T: Lots of malt up front, slightly roasty, which brings a nice amount of bitterness by itself. Molasses flavor comes through as well. No real hops to speak of. Alcohol is well hidden.

M: Fells surprisingly light and refreshing. Medium bodied, with a medium amount of carbonation. Slightly sticky, but only in a good way.

D: At 7.5% ABV this is a dangerously drinkable beer. If it didn't come exclusively from Germany it would definitely be put on my normal rotation. Really great beer, represents the style well.

A dark brown, clear beer with a small head.

Smell is pretty roasted, which is typically like chocolate malt. There is some unsweetened dark chocolate smell and some molasses.

Taste is strongly roasted and a little strong sharp maltbitter, but not as roasted as the smell would suspect. There is a strong malt backbone. Definate chocolate notes and some caramel. Also some molasses taste. Alcohol is warming my throat. Body is sweet and sticky.
