Sometimes you have to look at life through a different set of lenses. When you’re set in stone like our founding fathers, every once in a while you just want to let loose and get a little hazy. Our hazy IPA, with its turbid pale color, abundant hoppy flavor and fruity aroma is deceivingly easy drinking. Light gold and cloudy with a creamsicle foamy head. Crisp, fruity aroma with stone fruit and citrus flavors. Subdued bitterness for easy drinking.

On tap at 21st Amendment's San Leandro brewery taproom.

A: Pours hazy golden yellow with a frothy cream white head that settles to a firm layer and laces nicely.

S: Big time sweet tropical and orchard fruit, citrus, a little resinous pine, biscuity malt, and caramel sweetness.

T: Tropical and orchard fruit, cherry, peach, melon, pear, apricot, papaya, and mango, citrus, tangerine, grapefruit, and lemon, a little resinous pine, biscuity malt, and caramel sweetness.

M: Medium body, moderate carbonation, soft on the palate.

O: If I didn't know better I'd guess there was some El Dorado in there adding hella sweet fruity notes. Sits a bit on the sweeter side but there is some underlying bitterness to help keep it in check. Not bad, but I'd definitely opt for the OG if I was pulling cans out of a cooler.

sad what happened to these guys, a once titan of the industry, still some beer around, i think there will be for a few more months or something the press release sad, but this already isnt fresh which is a shame, because i like the lighter body and the texture overall, as well as the fruity modern hop profile, but there is some real oxidation to this, and it just kind of makes me miss what it all used to be, not sure how many more of their beers ill ever have, so tried to really take this one in despite its imperfections. blonde and starchy but still light looking, pale straw colored, frothy white head on it too, looks pretty good from the can, nice bubbles throughout. the nose is citrus forward, could be citra hops adding an identifiable soft lemon note even though the papery oxidation and light metallic character this also has right off the bat, pineapple hard candy, green skittles, orange juice from concentrate, and a gentle cereal malt profile thats about right for this, bitterness seems very low, and this is juicy without being sweet, a quality ive grown to really like in the hazy ones. the flavor is pretty similar, this could be a citra driven brew but im not sure what all is in this, a note of green melon and its rind, white grapefruit, but its all quite mellow and approachable, and if it were fresher, it would be delightful. as it is now, it has some cool hoppy nuance and the pillowy mouthfeel is right on, but this is in a state of decline, like the company itself i suppose. relish the moment i guess, maybe im being too generous with the scores on this one, but if this is it for me and their beer, i want to remember it fondly...

Brew Free! or Die Hazy IPA has a thick, creamy white head and a golden-orange appearance. The aroma is of white wheat bread and a sweet, fruity, bready flavor, with low bitterness. Brew Free! or Die Hazy IPA has a medium body and a mostly-dry finish.

Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a hazy golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of tropical fruits. Taste is oranges, some pine, a hint of pineapple, mild bitterness. Feels medium/full bodied in the mouth and overall is a pretty good beer.

Perfectly acceptable, perfectly fine, middle-of-the-road drinker from a mix pack. Nothing offensive, nor outstanding. It is what it is. ...and often on sale!

12oz can. Poured out a cloudy, golden orange color with a small, off-white head of bubbly foam. It left sudsy trials of lace on the glass. It smelled of orange, pineapple, caramel and some pine. Very sweet fruity taste with tropical notes and a mild piney bitterness.

21st Amendment Brewery "Brew Free! or Die Hazy IPA"
12 fl. oz. can, coded "27129512 1201" (whatever that means!?)
$2.49 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: The label lists it at 6.5% ABV with 35 IBUs. It's hazy but not crazy hazy, and straw gold in color. The head is a big fluffy cap of bright white foam that looks like it could be a dessert. The aroma is fairly limited for the style. Of course without any clear dating on the can I have no idea how old this is. It seems fresh. I'm getting fruity notes of apricot, orange, and soft grapefruit. Let's hope the flavor is fuller... and it is, although it's far from bold. The malt is basic and sweetish and I can taste some wheat and oats so they've done well there. The fruity hop notes include the aforementioned apricot, orange, and grapefruit as well as some passionfruit and a little bit of berry. It's also earthy, resinous and lightly piney. The 35 IBUs of bitterness seems more median than moderate but it works, and it finishes dry, earthy, and lightly resinous with a little bit of bitterness lingering. It's a really well-balanced and delicate take on the style that's highly drinkable. In the mouth it's medium-light in body and gently crisp-then-smooth. There's a little bit of extra mouthfeel from the extra proteins in the wheat and oats but it's not a lot in comparison to most of the hazy IPAs on the market. One of the things it does well is lacing. The head held up OK but not great, yet it's left some very nice solid rings of thin but wide lace. I'm almost done, and I've enjoyed this beer but it's nothing special. It's very drinkable though, and on a hot summer day i'd reach for this before something fuller.

Poured into a grip shaped goblet: color is straw gold, hazy, head is off white and presents 1 finger thick. Head dissipates to a ring on the glass sides.

Smell is light mixed tropical fruit, muddled herbal/grass quality, light malt/wheat breadiness.

Taste is similar with more muddled mix of tropical fruit, light berry, herbal/floral qualities, light malt/wheat flavor.

Mouthfeel is low carbonation, moderate sweetness, lower bitterness, lingering bite on the tongue.

Overall a run of the mill hazy ipa - not juicy, not bitter, but not an AIPA.
