Reviewed from a 1987 era bottle provided for sampling at the Toronado Barleywine Festival tasting.
A rare experiment on the part of the Hurlimann brewery.. Brewed for a short couple of years, some bottles of this still pop up from time to time.
Aroma is deeply nutty brown malt with a growing note of soy and salt fermenting in the glass.
Flavor is instensely sweet with maple and brown sugar before giving way into a teriyaki and soy sauce type of chewy, fruity and earthy palate.
Finish is remarkably clean and long for a beer with this much potency behind it. Each sip takes a long moment of contemplation to allow the flavors to fully come away from the palate.
Absolutely astonishing how well this brew held up even 16-17 years after it hit the bottle.
