Standard brown half liter bottle with a cool brown, gold and white label featuring barley, hops, and the sun plus eagle symbol found on the Kazakhstani flag. The word “Pilsner” appears in English, while the rest of the main label is in Russian. The back and neck labels are in both Kazakh and Russian. Ingredients conform to the purity law. Best before 10/06/03, I opened it on 9/10/03. Shimkent is a small town on the southern border with Uzbekistan.

Pours a deep clear gold with a reddish tint. The head is thin, fizzy, white and very short-lived. A thin film stays on the surface for quite a while, however, complemented by a healthy collar and surprisingly good lace rings on the bottom half of the glass. The nose is tangy, with a touch of hops. The mouth is heavy sweet but evenly carbonated. The taste starts out tangy a bit like sour milk mixed with apricots. Some malt tones come out in the finish., but the sickly sweet taste is never fully overcome. I was told this was an excellent beer. Can’t say it lived up to it’s recommendation.
