Came to the table in a standard pint glass a clear deep golden a thin but retained white head atop, malt tilted aromas somewhat buttery with some toastiness and caramel a mild floral hop presence is shown.Easy quaffing hence the name I guess malt tilted and buttery with some mild fruitness and toasted elements hops are mild adding a bit of green to the beer.Easy going down nothing to write home about but sociable none the less.

This is a good beer for what I think the name implies: a beer to sit down with and drink a few. It's not flashy, but is a very workman-like brew. It's an amber color with a medium head. Aroma is floral, with some degree of maltiness. It's fairly hoppy. Mouthfeel is decent, and it's pretty drinkable.

This is okay and the price is right for its okayness. Very flowery smell and hoppy taste, not a favorite, but is drinkable for a pint, but not two. I would not hesitate to order in a pub with a Reuben sandwich or something similar. It would stand up to the forward flavors of such foods.

Presentation: 12 oz brown twist off bottle with a “Best Enjoyed Before” freshness date on the side of the label … that suspiciously looks like a Shipyard bottle & label.

Appearance: Clear and tawny with a decent froth and good retention.

Smell: Buttery, musty and malty aroma.

Taste & Mouthfeel: Faint musty and fruity ale like character with a layer of diacetyl in the back. Solid crispness in the moderate body with a thin layer of malt. Hops push with some bitterness and balance the beer out. Dry finish.

Drinkability & Notes: So this is a Shipyard contract brewed beer … you can tell from the filtering right away. It smells and tastes of a Shipyard brew, not Gritty’s at all. Aside from that it is an easy drinking ale … nothing more.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: Hazy amber color with a thin white head. Mild lacing on the glass.

Smell: Citrus and hops.

Mouthfeel/Taste: Rough medium bodied. Taste of bitter hops and pine.

Overall: This is where Gritty McDuff's gets it name from, a gritty rough ale. Good brew but not something I buy all the time.

Light orangey copper colored, very clear. Low head of white foam rises up and disappears quickly. Aroma is sweet malts (like a pilsner) and grassy hops. Flavor fairly matches the aroma. Mouthfeel is full and round with even carbonation. A buttery corn flavor lingers.

Gritty McDuff's Pub Ale pours a somewhat cloudy deep gold color. The head is minimal and short lasting. The smell is a mixture of heavy yeast and malts. The taste is somewhat malty and not unpleasant. The mouthfeel is somewhat thick at certain points with a coating staying on the tongue. A descent beer to give a try but not something I would recommend intentionally searching out.

Pours a 1” chunky off-white head over a light copper colored body. Head recedes leaving clingling lace in its wake. Subtle aromas of citric hops and caramel malt. Light grainy flavor with a drying citric hoppiness that tends to take over. Watery thin body. Low carbonation. Drying finish.

A weird beer. I’d expect much better from Gritty’s. The aromas are mild, but in no way indicative of the watery mess that follows. The thin body seriously detracts from the flavors and throws things out of whack. This seems much more like a Mild than a Pale Ale to me, but even then I’ve had Milds with more backbone than this. I love Gritty’s, but I’ll opt for one of their other fine ales over this one next time.

Great brew to start the evening. Fruit and caramel notes a bit too heavy

A - Copper colored beverage with a thin head (less than one-finger).

S - Faint smell of flowers, but really not much else their.

T - Not much here that stands out either. Pretty balanced some more hints of hops in the very end. Good flavor just nothing exceptional.

M - Medium-bodied. Carbonation could be toned down a bit.

D - Easy to drink. "Refreshing," in the words of my wife. Good I could drink a bunch of these but it is nothing spectacular or out of this world.

Gritty McDuff's- Pub Ale

Appearance- Golden amber brown with a moderat size, but heavy lacing head.
Smell- Big caramel malt.
Taste- Sweet caramel malt up front with a light pine hop presence.
Mouthfeel- Sweet up front with a dry, almost metallic finish and aftertaste.

Overall- A tasty beer thats for sure. Slight metallic finish causes it to lose a few points but otherwise enjoyable!

On Tap at some beach-side bar in Old Orchard Beach, Maine.

Looks...Pale amber/reddish hues with some gold. Thick frothy-ish head, white. Decent lacing later on.

Smells: Nutty with roasted malt.

Taste is a well balanced hop/malt flavor not very "deep" but plenty refreshing.

Feels slightly flat, although looks mildly active.

A decent roasty malt brew. Not overwhelmingly exciting.

A real amber color, but the head was smallish.A real nice hop and citrus smell. This has a dry hop filled taste, very, very dry.A real nice medium feel, but I could have this all day. This could be an everyday beer.I don't understand some of the bad Gritty reviews,I feel this is a quality brewery that make very good beers.

Gritty McDuff's Pub Ale

I was surprised by two things in Gritty McDuff's Pub Ale: #1, it's a very deep-amber/copper color where I was expecting something more golden, and #2, it's yeast character is more subdued than usual. There's still a bit of buttery diacetyl, but it's not bad.

Beyond that it's a basic English-style pale ale. There aren't a lot of hops in the aroma, and in fact the butteriness of the yeast beats them out, but there's some. And they do appear in the flavor, leafy and floral, and even a touch grassy. The malt is gently toasty and kissed with caramel; and it's really nicely balanced by a solid bitterness. It finishes dry with some residual leafy hops.

Overall it's an easy to drink beer that offers enough character to keep it interesting beyond one. And the name is appropriate, as this could easily be a session ale. Well done!

12oz bottle

A- Pours a brownish copper color with an off-white head.

S- Pretty nice toasted biscuity malt aroma with some caramel and hints of hops.

T- The taste like the aroma is on the malty side, but it does have a nice spiciness in there as well, and some hops in the finish. Pretty well balanced beer.

M- Not bad but not great, pretty much your average light bodied mouthfeel with little body.

D- Pretty good, I could session this beer no problem.

Overall, Gritty McDuff's Pub Ale is a pretty decent brew that is worth a shot. I don't know if I would pick it up again, but it was enjoyable nonetheless.

Picked up a single at the Party Source in Syracuse. Best before November. Ah, another Ringwood session ale. I know this yeast drives a few people crazy, but I enjoy it from time to time. The sugar candy smell and taste are right upfront (too much popcorn butter in the aroma) followed by smooth buttered bread and mild toffee notes. The beer finishes with a simple, balancing kick of peppery orange rind hops. Balanced, smooth, and drinkable. This is a fine example of an American-made session beer.

had this on tap while out to dinner. the appearance is a middle of the road, golden filtered look. had no head at all, not sure because of the pour or because of the beer. taste seemed well balanced at least, but nothing too wild goign on. pretty safe beer. lots of buttery caramel malts, no real hops going on. but once again nothing is overly distinct. the mouthfeel seemed once again pretty balanced nothing too big bodied or heavy about it, but not super carbonated like a bad lager. i found the drinkability to be pretty decent with this though, really enjoyable to accompany dinner or to drink many of them all night. definitely a session beer. but if looking for anything exciting or interesting, prob not your best choice. very uncomplicated, simple beer.
