This is a small-batch release that I had on-tap at the Gritty's in Portland. Served in a pint glass.
A: Dark brown with ruby where the light shines though. Decent head retention. A couple soap bubbeles here and there and some lacing. Looks nice enough.
S: Not much going on. Faint hops spice. Alcohol. I didn't smell as much malt as I would have thought.
T: The advertisement posted at Gritty's and the official webiste both mention that this beer is "loosely" based on the Altbier style, with the addition of Chocolate Rye malt. This caveat is most appropriate when it comes to taste. Initial hop bitterness overwhelms the maltiness, and segues into some spicy rye action before a long, dry hop finish. This beer packs more punch in the bitterness department than an altbier, there is a definite spicy rye bite to it.
M: This is a chewier, heartier beer than I would have expected for the style, or for the 5.5% ABV.
D: I finished this beer, but was fairly relieved when I was done with it. The bitterness began to wear on me, and it seemed more filling that beer usually tends to be.
Not my favorite beer ever, but definitely an interesting take on the style. I'd love to get some other BAs to check it out.

We love reviews (150 characters or more)! Check out: How to Review a Beer. You don't need to get fancy. Drop some thoughts on the beer's attributes (look, smell, taste, feel) plus your overall impression. Something that backs up your rating and helps others. Thanks!
