Reviewed from my notes. This was a special cask that Gritty's in Portland released on St. Patrick's Day 2011. It was served in a pint glass.
The beer is colored dark brown with a thin tan foam head resiting on top. Nice lacing is left behind as I drink. The foam head eventually settled to a foamy skim.
There is a rich chocolate malt aroma. Mixed in a few subtle bittering hops. I detect a slight smokiness as well. The aroma is warm and inviting. It is a great pub cask ale.
Chocolate malt in the flavor as well. English style bittering hops—more than some porters I've had, but nowhere near British IPA levels. The bitterness lingers. There is a noticeable amount of the Ringwood butter flavor.
It has a medium body and low carbonation. A slick buttery coat retains the flavor well.
It's nice to see Gritty's make a porter, although I don't think it's as good as Atlantic's or Geary's interpretation of the style. The fact that this one is on cask is a major selling point, as I think it really shines this way. The Ringwood aspects are a bit strong for my tastes, but I do enjoy the contributions of the dark malts and all the hops. I would get this at the pub again, but probably not in bottles (not that I expect it to be released in that form.)

We love reviews (150 characters or more)! Check out: How to Review a Beer. You don't need to get fancy. Drop some thoughts on the beer's attributes (look, smell, taste, feel) plus your overall impression. Something that backs up your rating and helps others. Thanks!
