Actually enjoyed at the Auburn, Maine pub this porter was a deep, dark brown color with a modest puddle of off-white bubbles on top that leaves similarly light lacing. The aroma brings pretty mild dark malt and wheat, disappointing. My first taste offers light charcoal chocolate and a bit of a grassy hop. Bitter dark chocolate comes through gradually with some root beer malt and a little citrus bite. But as you finish, the chocolate fades and it just ends up being bitter-ish and one dimensional. Like most Gritty brews this is light-plus bodied with a fairly frisky feel and touch of chalkiness. The charcoal idea seems most dominant and it’s okay. Not bad. But why is everything here so thin?

One-off brewed for American Craft Brew Week. Served on-cask in a tumbler pint, the beer is a dark, ruby brown coloring with a filmy, tight, off-white coating of film. Aromas are subtle, with a light nutty and milk chocolate sweetness riding a roasty backbone. Flavors are smooth and rich, with a chocolatey layered malt punch. Tasty! Roasted overtones, with a subtle mocha bitterness. This is a heavy chocolate blast that maintains a light, smooth body to be very drinkable. Smooth, rich finish with a roasty, dark chocolatey aftertaste.
