The hops and malts are well balance making this brew a very smooth American Style Stout. The roasty aroma is followed by hints of chocolate and coffee flavors with a dry hop finish.

Wellhead Brewery Crude Oil Stout
A medium brown head sits atop a deep brown, almost black body with hazelnut highlights around the edges.
Aroma of chocolate, roast, coffee, licorice, piney hops (dry hopping).
Taste is hefty-chewy malt, roasted coffee, dark cocoa, licorice, pine.
Medium-heavy with lots of residuals and a big oily feel from the dry hopping oils. Medium-low carbonation.
A great tasting stout that is in the Export Stout arena in terms of strength and flavor intensity. A nice drinking brew that I will gladly get a growler fill off during the next visit to this miniscule little brewpub.

14 oz shaker pint arrives a very dark reddish-brown color, barely letting some highlights show around the edges...not quite crude oil dark. Creamy tan foam is long-lasting and has some legs.
Black licorice and dark chocolate lead things off with a little bit of mild hopping in evidence. Has a rootbeer-esque sweetness, reminds me a bit of Kit-Kat candy bars.
Hmmm, color me impressed with this one. Easily the best beer I had at the Wellhead. A tasty and well brewed American style stout. Bittersweet chocolate is the most prevalent flavor, but also comes through with a nice hop bitterness and not-quite-coffee roastiness. Pretty full body and just about perfect feeling on the palate, well balanced. I could drink a growler of this pretty easily! Very good stout.
