Tapps is not currently brewing and the server told me that the place was in the process of being sold. She believed that the new owners were planning to recommence brewing but had little further information on this.

Currently (October 2007) the beers on tap are from Pump House in Moncton NB. Three brews were listed on the boards but in fact only two were available as they were out of the Cadian Cream Ale. I started with the Fire Chief Red Ale (5%) which I enjoyed. It was true to style and not overly cold or heavily carbonated. The server told me that the Taps brewery, when operational, produced beers lower in carbonation.

The other available beer was Muddy River Stout (5%) which was also enjoyable, not too heavy and with distinct coffee notes.

The place is clearly not doing too well at present and we were the only customers in the place by 9pm. Whilst not unpleasant it looks as if it is ready for a makeover. The food was fine and the server was excellent, in fact with little else for her to do we spent a very enjoyable hour sharing views on world travel destinations!

A fine establishment right in the middle of the business district. Almost across the street from the Delta Hotel and a couple of blocks from the Hilton, the convention centre and an easy ten minute walk from the cruise ship berths. Typical of east coast establishments in that all the usual Molson and Labatt/Interbrew products are here along with Moosehead and a few imports but nothing out of the ordinary.

Tapps is, of course, a brewpub and the real reason to come here is to sample their wares. The on-tap brews were all their own: Shamrock Irish Red Ale, Marco Polo India Pale Ale, MacPherson's Cream Ale, Nut Brown Ale, and Raspberry Ale. Brewer Bruce Madsen (he's been at this for 20+ years) has created a fine selection. The Nut Brown Ale is a good dark ale. I personally enjoy the Shamrock Irish. The Marco Polo is their number one best seller - its a pale ale so its a good intro to the newbie taking that first step outside the macros. There are also others that are seasonal.

The food is well prepared and covers everything from burgers and steaks to seafood and all the usual pub fare. (I just had a great philly rib open face sandwich and I'd have that again.) Good friendly service that's a bit laid back, but, hey, I wanted to take my time trying beer!

Open: 11am - 2am daily.
