i am a maple beer sucker, love all things maple really, but this is an excellent brew, my first from bitter root. its deep and dark and smooth from the oats, with a lot of roast character from the malt and a bit of bitterness too, maybe even a trace of earthy smoke at the end, quite well made on its own, but the inclusion of maple syrup really sets it off. it might be added to the beer after fermentation, as the flavor is really intact and doesnt seem to have been worked on much by the yeast. its well dosed and not overly sweet like some of these can be, but the maple flavor is really robust and natural, and i like it a lot. the dark grain keep the maple balanced and not too sweet, and it seems to bring out a little chocolate note as it warms up a bit, adding some cool complexity and super compatible with the prominent maple. smooth in feel, no more carbonation than it absolutely needs, nice and palate coating but not too thick. hearty. i like it not being too big in terms of alcohol as well. nice beer overall, ill look for more from these guys!
