unexpectedly heady offering for this little spot, a barrel aged plum sour, but im not sure how its made, enough weird yeast and funky character to it that it could easily be a mixed fermentation thing, nice fruit profile too, quite distinctly plum, which is hard to do in beer, so well done there. its a little amateurish i reckon, but its mature, has some earthy grain at its core, isnt too sour to drink, and definitely is unique, enjoyed a pour when we visited the brewery. a little bit hazy, light lavender tinted, short off white head on it, decent carbonation, a tad thick looking, but the color is distinctive. the nose and taste are similar, tart up front with hints of sweeter blackberry and more puckery black currant, later notes of saison, some wheat malt i think, a light ester to it, lemon and white floral character, some definite tang, and then as it warms and at the end its got some real funk to it, not a known bretty thing, but definitely a little wild. juicy dark berry, sturdy grain, light sweetness, and hints of red wine and vanilla coming out from the presence of the oak here, more wood than whatever was in the barrels, fine by me. the plum profile is cool, its absolutely plum, ripe and bright in an otherwise kind of heavy drink. i didnt expect to find anything this exotic on here, the beers ive had from the before the visit had been mostly more straightforward styles, so this was cool. it could be a bit better refined, its good but its raw. rad place too, nice folks, cool old building, glad we could stop in for a couple!
