A real odd one...
Backed up by other reviewers... it really is an ESB with added up-front lively hops - but should I drink cold/warm or however? I just ended up drinking it into a Teku in three goes and it was warm in the end but I really enjoyed it hence the review....

Well I thought I'd see the last of these, but no. They bring out another. I have tried and cellared some of the earlier releases with mixed results. But here goes.

A - Pours a dark translucent tan colour

S - A nice mixture of malt and hop aromas with a hint of sweetness

T - Up front some nice creamy malt flavours. A touch f hop v=before a nice spicy malt finish. Not overpowering just nicely balanced. Great stuff.

M - Medium body with low to medium carbonation which seems typical of the style

O - Given that this is a rare brew style and I haven't all that many alt biers. I'd say this brew is a winner. Whether it stacks up against the style characteristics is for others to judge. I can say that this is a very well balanced brew that will leave you wanting anther one.

Just when I was lamenting the loss of Little Creatures Single Batch brews, whilst conversing with someone about the all-too recent CUB (Carlton United Breweries) takeover of Pirate Life, they bloody well bring out another Single Batch beer. This one a Sticke Altbier, I style I admit I have little experience with. Fact of the matter is that Little Creatures had dropped the ball, fumbled it like I fumble everything I pick up, when they got bought out the other mob in the macro beer duopoly over here in Australia: Lion Nathan. It was a gradual petering out of the ABV on their limited release brews, to the point where I stopped reviewing anything they released, until now that is. What can I say? I love a big dark German beer, and hopefully Reinhold can deliver all that Altbier goodness [gracious me].

Poured from a 568ml Imperial pint bottle into a stein.

A: Light and clear copper coloured body with big effervescent bubbles within and a rather beige 1 centimetre head that slowly descends leaving small lace blobs on the side of the glass. Probably a bit lighter than other Altbiers, however it’s hard to tell with my limited experience. 7/10.

S: Quite bready with a nice floral/earthy hop note that reminds me of an English Extra Bitters style rather than a German one. There are some nice biscuity and toasty malts too... if they didn’t call it “Reinhold Sticke Altbier” Little Creatures could have gotten away with calling it “Nigel ESB” at this stage. Aroma is just lacking a touch given the 6.5% ABV - needs just a little bit more oomph. 7/10.

T: Yep this is soooo an ESB in Altbier clothing - flavour is upfront toffee and tobacco leaf, mid biscuits & crumpets provide a nice tea break and a malty backbone, towards the finish is a coppery note, and finish is dry with a light herbal bitter note. It’s pleasing without being brash, though there is a slight alcohol taste, and it’s not nearly as outrageous as previous Single Batch outings. 7/10.

M: Mouthfeel lacks a certain German creaminess, though I’m not sure if creaminess is even a thing with Altbiers, better check the BJCP 2015... “Medium bodied. Smooth.” It’s def medium bodied, not very smooth though, and a bit gassy. 6/10.

D: Good to see Little Creatures bringing back the Single Batch - I missed their wild brews. This is one of their tamer SB beers, though it’s interesting due to the rarity of the style over here in Aus, however it comes across a bit ESB(ish) for better or worse. Still I enjoyed this gassy slightly-boozy Nigel ESB. 8/10.

Food match: Weirdly feel like a curry and a biff-up right now...
