Little creatures were one of the first Aussie breweries to be classified as a craft brewery, and their signature pale ale is still legendary down under for the style. Despite the fact they were bought out years ago by Lion, the quality of their brews hasn’t dipped too much.
Being the hot AF, dry nation that is Australia, the Pacific/tropical/summer ale style is received with great popularity in Australia for its bright popping citrus flavours, and light, easy and refreshing taste, perfect for sipping under a scorching sun. These beers give the impression of lying under a palm tree on a beach somewhere for from ones troubles and stresses. Every man and dog in every brewery does that least one of these style beers. Let’s see how the winged cherub fares.
Appearance: poured into my pint glass, from a bright and cheerful sky blue can, it pours a nice bright golden colours. It’s hazy and there amongst the carbonation bubbles a nice bit of sediment floating around, amplifying the haze of the beer. It’s got a nice frothy 1cm white head. Looks pretty, and excellent for the style. Head could be better, but it’s looking solid. (4/5)
Smell: Bright and cheerful. Strong citrus fruits, strong tropical stone fruit notes of mango, passion fruit and a bit of orange peel. There’s a smooth sweetness of the malt, almost creamy sweetness, bordering on vanilla ice-cream. (4.25/5)
Taste: it’s odd. After the nose of the beer I was expecting to be hit in the face by a mango, and have passion fruit rain down on me like a tropical storm. The flavours seem rather muted and dull. I mean that’s not to say they’re not there, but it’s hollow, there’s good bitterness however, the smell is deceiving and doesn’t follow through with the taste. Not sure how fresh this can is but there’s a metallic ring to the beer. It’s BB Is late Feb ‘23. At 4.4% ABV, it’s pretty watery and certainly has a soda water aspect to it. It finishes pretty dry. (2.25/5).
Feel: it’s thin, decently carbonated, but is refreshing, a good beer on a hot summer day. (2.75)
Overall: It started so promising. It looked good, smelt good, and then just fell flat in its overall flavour. It’s not terrible, but completely underwhelming, and something more reminiscent of the stuff churned out by the micro breweries contracted to make Pinnacle Drinks range of “craft beers”. Dunno if it’s the macro Lion company rearing it’s ugly head, but I must say it’s let me down somewhat. (2.75/5)
