It's back! 8 oz. pour into snifter.

A: Pours a deep black with a full, lasting, 1 finger white head. Thick lacing remains along the walls of the glass. Appealing beer.

N: Ripe, dried fruit. Some light notes of caramel apple, raisons, nuts, and some dark roasted malt.

T: Noteworthy roasted character, along with some chocolate, prune, raisons, and other dried fruits. An interesting "nut" character to the beer.

M: A bit chalky. Good amount of carbonation, but the beer left a coating on the interior of my mouth. Really nice mouthfeel otherwise. Creamy, full, and very enjoyable.

D and O: This was a great beer. Bob puts out some really nice experimental beers, and this is just another one. Glad he brought it back.

I just visited the brew pub this past weekend and had this brew on tap. the color of the beer was dark creamy brown. The aroma had a powerful sweetness. A very strong alcoholic taste. The flavors of fruit, a hit of oak and spices that seem to dance on your taste buds. It isn't strong in hops nor over powering of malt. The mouthfeel is silky and not a mouth full. This is an unbelievable Barleywine, one of the best that I have had. I fell that this is a brew that has gone unnotices, the diamond in the rough. I would have it again and again with good friends. This is not a brew that you could drink all day but delightful to indulge from time to time.

Originally reviewed March 23, 2005. On tap at the brewpub. Deep rich murky dark burnt brown pour, with fully diminished head. Very still. STRONG apricot and cherry aroma. Wow! Very alcoholic. Strong flavors of abbey fruitcake and oranges simmered in spices. Unfortunately this potent brew is somewhat one dimensional, lacking much hops flavors or malt distinctiveness, except in the finish. This is like no other Barleywine I’ve had. The beer is aged in Oak for a full year, before release. I’ve had this again and re-evaluated on the basis that the two respectable barleywines that I had following this one, weren’t even in the same ballfield. This is a ridiculously good brew. A recent try again, leaves this one slightly less interesting. I appreciate the interesting mingling of this beer’s style as somewhere between an imperial stout and barleywine, but the same grain bill as all their other beers, make this less desirable and lacking a total completeness to be my favorite barleywine.
