I had a short draught of this as a precursor to my meal. Color was black as pitch. Head was a dark brown, moderately tight and diminished in a minute or two. Nose was super rich, mostly sweet, with hints of dark fruits (plum?).
Taste was full, sticky sweet, with flavors of pumpernickel bread, burnt sugar, dark dried fruits, molasses and alcohol. The alcohol flavor lent to what little balance that existed in the beer by cutting some of the almost overwhelming sugary sweetness. This is a sipper, no doubt, and really quite a sweet beer overall, almost cloying sweet. Very little roasted character and a low hop profile kept almost any bitterness that could have helped in the balance out of the picture. Mouthfeel was syrupy and clingy (if that's a word?).
Finish was long and sweet with a light-as-air hop tingle. Maybe a dessert beer? After one shorty draught I was ready for something else, just too sweet.
