Pours a deep, dark brown with mahogany highlights and a small, off-white head. Smells especially of coffee with a slight brown sugar sweetness. The flavor initially offers a good balance of sweet and roasty malt. The roasty aspect is considerable and makes the flavor somewhat woody and astringent. Some clean, pale malt becomes noticeable after a few sips. Fairly bitter hops seem earthy and herbal. It's medium bodied, fairly carbonated and crisp.
Par for the course on the whole, which includes the gradual devolving of the pleasantly sweet, roasted malt into bitter old coffee. It's considerably bitter, seemingly with the hop profile of a pilsner. Not bad but could be better.

330ml bottle poured into abbey glass july18 2010
A dark brown with no real head or lace
S some burnt malt a little chocolate and some smoked meat of all things
T what I smell but with a little more to it, some earthy roast and some more milk chocolate
M a little thin for the color but the bubbles give it a slightly creamy feel
D went down easy enough but I couldn't see myself drinking a bunch of these back to back
thanks to TimE for bringing this one over to hoser's for the Sunday British Open tasting
