Windward Wheat is a true-to-style hefe weizen, offered as a summer seasonal from Lake Superior Brewing. Their website claims that this is an early-summer brew, but it took me until August this year to find a sixer around Duluth. Maybe I wasn't looking hard enough...

Overall, this is a fine hefe weizen and one of Lake Superior's best brews (on par with Sir Duluth Oatmeal Stout). It is refreshing and easy to drink, has a very strong banana aroma, and is much dryer than many other examples of the style that I've had.

A: Cloudy straw with a creamy, though not enormous, head. Somewhat underwhelming relative to style characteristics.

S: Very strong on banana--so much so that any other scents, save a rubbery-phenolic tinge--are hard to find. I like it.

T and M: Strong malt and clove flavors up front followed by a slightly watery middle and a very dry and (too?) bitter finish. Relatively light-bodied overall. Excellent length of flavors; smooth transition from the initial sweetness to the dryness at the end.

D: Light, refreshing, and easy. Even, especially, in August this is a perfect summer brew.

This is a solid hefe weizen, worth seeking out if you're in the Northland.

Golden with a white head and a noticeable bit of wheat beer haze. The head was about 3/4" but didn't last too long.

Wheat malt dominates the aroma and imparts a delicious sweetness to the flavor. There is a bit of banana ester in the aroma, which complements the sweet malt.

This is not bitter beyond, what it might take to balance the sweetness in the malt, but it does have a slightly tart finish.

This is a seasonal offering or special edition brew or something like that. I had it as a six pack of bottles. I tried some with meals. I didn't find great food compliments with turkey or sweet potatos -- but it was OK. It's a nice, delicate beer that maybe does better on its own.

Originally reviewed September 17, 2004. On tap at the Big Lake Brewfest. Hazed lemon pour. Hexane lemony aroma with dash of chives and cloves. Watery super sweet fresh flavor. Sacharrin finish is sweet and sticky, a little too much. A fine example of the style, but lacking a little depth and character. However, drinkable.
