On tap at Big River brewpub, December 2009.
Appearance: Very dark brown with red hues lower down the glass. Opaque throughout but so dark at the top of the pint glass that it was very difficult to see through. Biege, tight creamy head, receding to leave good lacing.
Aroma: Some malt, some spice, limited. Nice, but nothing pronounced here.
Taste: Very malty, with some slight bitter coffee and distant chocolate. Lots of clove and nutmeg, some cinnamon, gentle vanilla. Perhaps a hint of ginger. Very slight hop bite, but minimal. Just enough to balance it. Gentle dark fruits, minimal alcohol taste. Slightly sour, with just a hint of Christmas sweetness. Very long lasting bitterness, with the predominant spices of clove and nutmeg blending wonderfully across the palate. Dry finish.
Mouthfeel: Fairly full bodied, smooth, creamy, English style.
Drinkability: A genuine English style spiced winter ale. Much drier and more sour than other examples in the pacific northwest, which makes a refreshing change. This is a very well brewed beer. The only real shortcoming of this beer is the lack of aroma. The flavour is very complex and accomplished, and it would have been nice to receive more of this in the aroma. Nevertheless, this is a very good winter ale.
