Sampled at the restaurant as Uncle Buck's Scotch Ale.

Pours a copper color with a small head. Smell is malty sweetness with a little smoke. The flavor is like the smell, with some malty sweetness as well as smoked malt. This may not be a wee heavy like it is described at the brewery, but it was the best of the four beers I tried. I would recommend this to anyone going to the restaurant.

on tap at the grapevine brewpub

cellphone notes

appearance: served in a standard pint, dark amber body

smell: buttery, grainy, not really what i was anticipating

taste: a pretty off scotch ale - i wanted more chocolatey malts but instead got buttery biscuit with a dry finish. probably need to stay away from this one - kind of a junker

mouthfeel: a little sour, messy mouthfeel

drinkability: meh

This beer is a deep copper-reddish color, only a slight head but excellent lacing. Nose is light sweet malt. Fortunately, flavor is more complex in the malt profile: caramelized malt, somewhat toasty, on the sweet side but balanced by a mix of bitterness and toasted malt. Hop flavor is low. Yeast character is lightly fruity. Good body and mouthfeel.

A solid beer. Big Buck's beers have much improved since last I was there, 2 years ago.

Tasted at the Big Buck Brewery in Grapevine, TX on 06/08/06.

Mahogany to brown in color with a low beige ring for the head. Roasty and sweet dark malt aromas and flavors. Something was a bit off here but I couldn't quite put my finger on it. Medium-full bodied and fairly smooth.

Not quite what I was looking for in a Scotch Ale but worth a try.

Per Chalkboard at the Brewpub:
18.2 OG
16 IBU
7.2% ABV

Color is a solid dark brown. Head size is decent with average retention. Aroma is of sweet dark malt with a hint of diacetyl, or some other smell I couldn't quite recognize. Malt flavor is enjoyable, with a slight earthy edge. Grainy malt flavor is higher than expected. Big Buck's overall taste did not quite equal a Scotch Ale for me, this seemed more like a modified amber.
