Baden Baden 25/10 2016. 50 cl can from Penny Markt. Red can with a big "5.0" on it. Fairly strange when you consider that this beer holds an ABV of 5,2.
Pours clear yellow with a small white head. A bit bubbly. Head disappears quite fast leaving thin rim of foam running along the side of the glass. No lacing.
Aroma of sweet malts and grains and boiled vegetables. Pale malts and bread.
Low carbonation and watery palate. Kind of flat texture.
Flavor has a light sweetness followed by a medium strong bitterness. Aftertaste is bitter and sourish.
This is not sophisticated in any way. But it holds a decent ABV and is not overly sweet. That counts for something.

Please Germany...you have never let me down, and I really need a beer. In fact I have a red one and another with the German flag on. Let's try the red one first, to decide if the German flag is worthy to display in my apartment to my neighbours. This is following my first ever Austrian beer called Gosser, which I liked lots.
I thought 5.0 was rather a boring name as it's the same alcohol percentage as all boring commercial beer. But it's actually 5.4%. Bonus!
Initial aroma from the can is kind of like apple juice, no idea why. As I pour, the apple juice aroma continues to engulf the room. But as the head dies down (impressive head with small bubbles by the way), the bitterness from the hops now engulfs the room. Kind of malty aroma too. Maybe too malty.
Taste is a mega disappointment. But improves with the 2nd try. It's very malty, almost as much as a Dubbel. Kind of heavy. Not my style, if I want malt, it needs to me dark. This is kind of malty and heavy, the hops are not powerful enough to counteract.
Overall flavour is a little heavy and caramelly for me. I will leave the version with the German flag on for later or tomorrow. It really doesn't taste like a usual German pilsner...plus it has hops extract as opposed to actual hops. I think the German purity law should force brewers to use actual hops and not extract ; )

From the red but plain can, it pours a golden amber color with a modest head that eventually diminishes to nothing. In the nose, it is lightly malty. In the mouth, the same. Decent, but forgettable beer.

500 ml can, bought in Germany. Can is all red with white letters, very minimalistic, to cut off expenses, according to a text on the can.
Poured into a lager glass.
This beer is golden yellow in colour, with two fingers of white, soapy head,. Average retention on the head, some bubbles rising to the surface.
Malty smell with lots of breasy notes.
Taste is sweet as a lager is, nothing too be excited for.
Thin body, almost watery and very light carbonation.
With that price, that ABV and that mouthfeel, and with a taste that's not half bad, I could drink it the whole day.

appearance; straw yellow and clear with a moderately well retaining white head.
smell; a hint of malts with a gentle bitter hop spice. Malts are not by any means sweet but more grassy.
taste; a decent export, like a Kölsch with a lager instead of ale aftertaste. The hop bitterness is present but subdued and grainy cereal malts and a hint of fresh corn are most dominate in flavor. Really blunt flavor that last a bit in the aftertaste. Solid export flavor.
mouthfeel; crisp with a sharp carbonation. Grating on the tongue but still loose and smooth.
drinkability; can feel heavy in the stomach at times but if one is really in the mood to drink, this can make a quality session beer.
One of the better Exports I've had but not really anything special. This style usually fails to impress me with its muted flavors but this one is worth a honourable mention.
