Privatbrauerei Eibau i. Sa. GmbH "Berliner Geschichte Black Beer"
16.9 fl. oz. can
$4.49 @ Total Wine & More, Claymont, DE
Notes via stream of consciousness: The German word "geschichte" translates to "history" in English and I wonder if this is a historic beer. My guess is that it's not but you never know. The stream of liquid pouring from the can is a clear brown but it becomes darker when the glass is full. I certainly wouldn't call it black, but it is a dark brown. It's clear, and there are some very nice ruby, crimson, and golden highlights when held to the light. The head is a short cap of tan. In the nose I'm getting dark malt with a breadiness that's reminiscent of black bread. There's some subtle caramel to it. On to the taste... it's fairly rich, particularly for a beer of just 4.5% ABV. It's again bready, a bit toasty, caramelish, and even a hint chocolate-like. There's a little bit of dull, herbal hops to it as well. It's not very bitter but it remains balanced, and the carbonation is moderate giving it a creamy, smooth mouthfeel. That hurts the head retention, and thus the lacing, but it's an OK trade-off. All in all this is a decent schwarzbier but it could certainly be better, particularly given its price.

Poured from the can into a pokal style glass.
Deep brown and dark red, with even a hint of clarity through the pour. Very nice light tan forming head, exceptionally creamy with a good thick cap of three fingers of height. Spider like lacing and a small hint of noticeable rising carbonation through the body.
Decent aroma. Slight touching caramel sweetness but goes to more hinting darker molasses. Mild sense of chocolate on the nose also, somewhat clean but also hints more of sticky malt character to come.
Interesting palate. The expected low abv is not without it's drawbacks mostly in mouthfeel. Hinting a bit wet, there's touches of weakend everything on the palate. Weak sensing molasses with touches of banana like ester. Somewhat clean, but strangely sticky and metallic a little in the finish. Light touches of coffee, but also some neat tasting banana, and even prune to raisin like sourness that is tolerable and interesting in the aftertaste.
A pretty good tasting schwarz that seems dumbed down though because of weak mouthfeel unfortunately.

From the can, it pours a clear dark brown with reddish highlights and a modest light tan head that reduces to a thin layer. The nose gets light grassy earthy scent with burnt notes. The mouth follows with a watery feeling light burnt malt flavor.

Pours a clear, medium brown color; clear in the glass yet bordering on opaque; thick, frothy, light khaki colored head. Mild malt nose bordering on light caramel with a hint of vanilla or very light toffee. The taste follows along the lines of the smell; mild sweetness; very light toffee character; mild to light bitterness. Medium-light body; smooth and silky; semi-sweet mouthfeel.
No, not an astonishing beer, but decent enough. Plus, the brewery is not located in Berlin but is interesting that they've offered (for export, at least?) some Berlin-themed history. This beer features the Kaiser Wilhelm Kirche in Berlin (off the Ku'damm and virtually next to the Zoo). While stationed in then-West Berlin in the mid- to late-80s, the church was a rather sobering reminder of what war can bring to civilization. As for the beer, I'm assuming this is the brauerei's repackaging of their normal schwarzbier.
Pouring temperature: 45 °F; canning info: n/a
