Poured from a can into a pilsner glass.
Look: Dark brown with some red hues when held to the light. Small, fluffy tan head. Head retention is great, but the lacing is.
Smell: Coffee. Medicinal. Tobacco. There's good hop presence which adds nice character. Maybe even a little spicey.
Taste: A bit more malt character with a dry dark chocolate finish. The hops round it out with a little bitterness, but are less pronounced than ok the nose.
Feel: Light bodied with good carbonation, but it is a little watery.
Overall: I love the flavor of this beer.

Half liter Eibauer Schwarzbier can from Costco Biergarten box at 45 F with dinner. Overall mild dark lager. Reminds me of a decent American dark from the 70s (Pabst Dark draft, Heidelberg Alt, Henry's dark).

Pours a darkish brown color with a medium tan head. Aroma is sweet roasted malt and bready. Taste is similar to aroma with a slight hop bitterness. BOD 4-1-2025

500 ml can coded "P: 10/06/2025 E: 10/12/2026 10:08:21 11". Sampled on 28/10/2025
$59.99 / 24 can case - Costco's Biergarten Collection, Costco, Christiana, DE
Notes via stream of consciousness: It's poured a very dark brown that appears black in the full glass, as expected. When held to the light you can see that it's clear with some orange and copper highlights. The head is a full cap of khaki colored foam. I'm getting a pleasant combination of dark malts and fruitiness in the aroma. On to the taste... there's a little bit of a metallic note that's bothersome, but it's otherwise clean. There's some minor dark chocolate, nuttiness, a sweet red berry-like fruitiness, some grainy maltiness, grassiness, a suggestion of roasty coffee, a touch of herbal hops, and a moderate to median bitterness. It finishes dry with some residual dark chocolate, grassiness, and bitterness lingering. In the mouth it's medium-light in body and gently zesty on the tongue. The head retention is about average but the lacing is better. I've certainly had better examples of the style but it's still a decent enough beer.

500 ml bottle, bought at KaDeWe, Berlin. Dark brown colour, nearly black. Large and lasting greyish brown head. Moderate malty aroma with notes of caramel and bakery, hints of prunes. Moderate carbonation, mellow and pleasant mouthfeel. Nice moderately malty flavour with a pleasant roastiness, hints of schwarzbrot. Easy drinking. I like it.

Quite handsome dark amber brown with long-lasting foam. Pleasant cereal and roasted malt aroma. Creamy carbonation with a smooth mouthfeel. Just slightly sweet with a malty taste. Roasted grain flavor but not a charred taste. Just the slightest bitter aftertaste. Overall this is a better than average example of the Schwarzbier style. From the 500 ml can dated 01/04/2025. Another brew from the Costco German variety case.

Smells of roasted malt, faint caramel and coffee in the nose and the taste was initially sweet with caramel, roasted grains, coffee grinds, bakers chocolate, floral hops, a hint of pine and earthy notes/peat moss. There’s a nice level of bitterness, a smooth mouthfeel, very mild carbonation and a classic German Schwarzbier finish with roasted malts and some hoppy bitterness.

Pours dark auburn in the glass, but transparent when held up to the light. Moderate white foam dissipates quickly but leaves some lacing. Smell is strong grain, with grassy and medicinal hops. Flavor also starts strongly with grain and malt. Hops comes on in the middle and sustains a very smooth, mildly bitter finish. Body is fairly light, as befits the style, and mouthfeel is smooth, with just enough carbonation to sustain a crisp finish. Overall, this seems a very good example of the Schwarzbier style.

This one is not bad. It's a dark lager with a decent taste, goes down easily. It isn't a great beer, but good. I like trying the different beers in the Costco box.

From the half liter can in the 2024 and 2025 Biergarten Collection from Costco, it pours a dark brown with reddish highlights and a very nice large light tan head that slowly reduces and leaves lacing. The nose gets some burned grain. The mouth follows with a relatively light black malt flavor that leaves little aftertaste.
