Barrel Aged Wee Heavy 2006

Since I'm a member of five Scottish clans, it seemed only fitting that I give this (American) "wee heavy" a whirl! The colour was a medium brown with no head at all. The aroma was redolent of caramel and very tangy. On the palate, there was a massive wave of burnt toffee, caramel, treacle, Lyle's Golden Sirup, dark brown sugar, Christmas cake, a hint of soy and one incredibly long finish!

Provided by John Boy in a glass barrel shaped growler striaght from Cb's shop .

Poured a smooth brown ale with little head. Nose is of sweet caramel and hints of bourbon are present. Taste is sweet and delicious keeps me coming back for more . I don't like bourbon but Cb's added just enough to give you a presence and a smoothness like I 've never had before. 8%abv is practicly unoticed and proves to be a great session beer. By far the best one I've had from Cb's and hopefully not the last!

Presentation: 64oz CB's clear glass growler poured into a pint glass ~24 hours after purchase.

Appearance: Pours a dark red, garnet. A thin white head quickly dissapates to slight lacing near the edges.

Smell: Upon first sniff you definately smell the Jack. But once you get past that a caramel-y yet fruity sweetness comes up and does well mingling with the wiskey. The alcohol is well hidden.

Taste: Like the first sniff the first sip comes up all Jack, and again once you get past that the delacate flavors of the wee-heavy come out. Dark fruits, brown sugar and caramel are evident and is rather sweet.

Overall: This is a tasty brew but you know that Jack was involved in this..good thing I like Jack. My mother-in-law loves the CBs Wee Heavy and could only get down one sip of the barrel-aged. Left more for me :)

Wee Heavy aged in old Jack Daniel's barrels. Poured from growler into pint glass (no thistle on hand; sorry).

A: Pours like a nut brown ale, with a hint of red. Head is very light, with almost no retention. Left a little foam island in the middle of the beer, a ring of foam around the perimeter.

S: Honey, nutty malt, a slight hint of toffee, and (very light) whisky at the end.

T: Honey and caramel/toffee at the front. Roasty and woody/smoky in the middle. Finish is caramel and whisky, with a touch of bitterness to round it out, and a hint of alcohol. A sweet beer that doesn't stay too sweet throughout. My first wee heavy of any kind, so I'm not sure how this fits in with other beers of the style. Interpret scores accordingly.

M: A bit syrupy, and not overly carbonated.

D: At 8% abv, definitely not a session beer. Tasty, though. Pretty well-balanced, and it doesn't just taste like beer with whisky dumped into it. The whisky plays well with the other ingredients.
