One of the better American made pilsners. Just not the same as the way this varietal tastes in the Czech Republic or Germany.

To start with I'm a newb to the whole sour thing. I had the American Wild once and thought it was just an off batch that was pawned off on some poor bar. I was soooo wrong. When SF Beerweek hit the bay area I had a chance to try some sours. I must say I'm impressed.
5 oz. served in a small goblet
A-light brown with reddish tints
S-What really set the hook was the smell. Of all the sours I tried this one really hit me with that acidic/vinegar smell. (Old wine barrels?) Definitely some fruit traces.
T-Sour grape undertones with the acidic bite at the finish. Salt and Vinegar Potato chips come to mind.
M-Surprisingly light on the tongue. Finishes quite dry.
D-The first sip made me pucker up. The second sip made me smile. The third sip made me order another.
This is a beer that I will seek out for special occasions...if only it was in bottles. A guy can dream right?

Tap @ T. Funky root red brown. Small tannish head of foam. Minimal lacing and retention. This one is funky. Aromas are of Cheese/cloth, vinegar, cherries and other "red" fruits, a bit of oak, and a bit of a citrus. Taste is funky vinegar and oak, malt vinegar-ish like fish and chips. Some spicy spice and jucy red fruits followed by a sour milk finish. Intense! and...Awesome! Mouthfeel is creamy smooth and juicy. Drinkability is high for a brew this intense. A guess of 8%ABV. Kinda reminds me of the dissident a bit...I also kinda like it better than the 20 and the 40. I heard rumours there is also a 99 to life in the works...

A: Red/orange/brown, little head (is this par for the style?)
S: Like a funky cheese. Lactofermentation/vinegar. Alcohol.
T: Really sour! Apple cider vinegar, maybe too vinegary. Definitely geuezy. I can taste the wild in it, but not balanced wildness.
M: Drying.
D: No more than one, but I definitely warmed to it as I drank it.

5 ounce glass at O'Briens in San Diego for $2.50, first Moonlight beer I have ever tasted
Color was a deep brown with a reddish tint when held to the light, thin 1/4 inch creamy white head that settled very quickly, not much retention, and very little lacing
Smell was full of strong sourness, this one smelled stronger any of the wild ales I have tasted from Russian River, lots of cherry and apple in the aroma, faint lemon scent as well
Taste had way too much vinegar, its tartness was so overpowering that it took me a good twenty minutes to get through just a few ounces, could not taste many other things other than cherry and a small amount of oak, this one needed some other subtle fruit flavor to mellow it out, the wine barrels this aged in must have been pretty fresh, not bad for its style, but not my thing overall
The body on this was pretty thick for a sour ale and it could have used some more carbonation, taste lasted a long time after each sip
Could drink much than another five ounces or so, sourness is so strong and heavy, taste is not complex enough to keep coming back for more, seemed like the ABV was relatively low or it was hidden real well
Really interested in trying the 20 to Life because I have heard it is much better from a few different people, glad I tried this one for myself and probably will not see this again until I make a trip up north, recommended if you are curious like I was

Got to taste this rare treat on tap at the O'Briens barrel aged night in SD. Moonlight beers don't make it down south much so I had to jump at the opportunity.
Pours quite brown with a thin white head. The flavor is much what I expected with a sour character dominating, and some vinegar tastes mixing in that aren't generally my favorite. But there hiding in the back is kind of an interesting and unexpected hop character laying on top of the sweet malts. My first impression was ouch sour vinegar, but when these new flavors backhanded me across the face I became a sudden fan. The mouthfeel is nice with a decent body and moderate carbonation level. I would call this drinkable for a sour ale. However I wouldn't want more than one smallish pour at a time, possibly just because I'm still learning this style. Very well done, complex, balanced and interesting american wild ale. Moonlight is doing good things.
Unknown ABV, but my *guess* is it's in the 7-8% ABV range.
