Appears a an opaque black with a dark brown head that fades into a small cap and mild collar. Spotty streaks of lacing are left around the glass.
Smell is of smokey nuts, cocoa, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, with a hint of coffee.
Taste is of the mentioned aromas with black cherries, prunes, and ripe fruit.
Mouthfeel is full bodied, hot, smooth, with some roastiness lingering in the swallow.

bottle:
Poured a black opaque ale with a 2 finger mocha cap which has short retention and goes to a surface lace.

Aroma is Musty-sweet with dried fruits, chocolate, some leafy floral hops...and our old nemesis fusil alcohol.

Profile is like so many other Imps; roast cocoa, coffee, dried fruits, chewing tobacco, piney/cedar hops...long wet charred finish...but this one hides its alcohol in the flavor very well....but it has this incredulous subtle smoke to it that carries through the entire profile.

Probably the first Schoune beer I enjoyed.

Picked up at the Metro Joanette in Montreal.

Pours pitch black, very opaque, thick tan head, nice lace spots, good retention. Smell is chocolate, some licorice, caramel, very malty, dates, nice. Taste is smokey, caramel, malty, more licorice and a bit of a lactic chocolate creaminess, nice roast in the finish, bit weak on flavour though. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with low carbonation, quite nice feel. Pretty solid stout, better than I expected. Wish I had a couple more.

I agree that it's more of a double stout than an Imperial.

A: Black with a medium-tan head, some retention, good lace.

S: Sherry/port, brown sugar, caramel, with hints of cherries & dark chocolate. Not at all what I expected from a stout, but great none-the-less.

T: Dark raisins, brown sugar, port, roasted coffee, well-rounded fruity esters from the ale yeast, hints of sour cherries and dark chocolate in the finish. Good bitterness, alcohol is pleasantly warming.

M: Really well-attenuated for it's weight, but it's not dry. Smooth, modest body with a slight roasted acidity in the finish.

D: Very drinkable.

Grabbed four bottles of this from Marche Jovi in Gatineau, PQ, without realizing it was retired. Guess I'll hold on to the last two for a special occasion or trade.

Poured a Coca Cola brown with a decent chocolate brown head into a chalice. Head faded fast, even when relatively warm.

Aroma is winey or grapey, which originally led me to believe this had spoiled. Lots of upfront alcohol and sweet brown sugar. Usually bad signs.

After the first few sips, I figured I was going to dump this one. Mildly watery mouthfeel accompanied by a surprisingly sour flavour (wine/grape again), plus some try coffee and possibly a hint of veg. Bitter, near astringent aftertaste.

Sounds horrible, doesn't it? HOWEVER... as I drank this, and as it warmed further, I started to actually enjoy it. The alcohol became more restrained, and the sourness subsided. Perhaps it was something I'd eaten, or just that this was a different take on the style? At the end, the flavour was a combination of citrusy hops and milk chocolate which, although it sounds weird, worked for a short time.

So, I ended up bumping up my scores a little based on the full experience. If the next one is bad too, I might adjust. We'll see...

A - Pours thick and syrupy, pitch black with almost no head. Carbonation is very visible, but retains very little head.

S - Very strong smell burnt caramel, burnt sugar and roasted malts. Even through the strong flavour of the beer, the smell of alcohol is apparent.

T - Initially a very strong taste of caramel and black coffee. There is a fairly strong alcohol taste, due to its high percentage. Gives way to a long lasting aftertaste of caramel and molasses. A good strong flavour representative of the style and deserving of the title "Imperial". A great beer, but only moderate in comparison to others of its style.

M - Very carbonated, especially for its style. Very thick and syrupy considering its carbonation and lingers quite a while with a good aftertaste.

D - A little too strong in flavour and taste of alcohol for me to drink all night, but one of these to start a night out would be well appreciated.

Overall, I like it. Not the best Imperial Stout I've had, but it is pretty damn good. I recommend this beer.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with big foamy dark brown head with good retention. Aroma of roasted malt is weaker then expected and a bit deceiving. Taste of roasted malt is quite subtle with some cheap chocolate note also being noticeable. Body is definitely too watery and carbonation too lively for the style. Definitely lacking some of the chocolate/coffee characteristic that I usually like finding in this style. I don’t understand why this is rated as an average beer when it is plainly worse then just average IMHO.

341 mL bottle, undated.

Inky black brew with a dark tan head that clings to the sides of the glass.

Rich aroma of sweet molasses and chocolate.

Sweet burnt sugar flavour dominates. Lots of molasses and licorice notes, balanced by bitter hops that linger far into the finish. Warming alcohol and a slight metallic twang round this one out. Carbonation is low and mouthfeel is syrupy.

Very pleasant, like liquid brown sugar.
