Bottle best by date: October 2005.
Appearance: dark brown, opaque, modest but creamy layer of tan foam, hazy
Aroma: dark malts, burnt caramel, dark-brown sugar, raisins, diacetyl
Flavor: malty-roasty front with a tangy backbone, some roast and a bit of smokey spiciness, very mild hop flavor and just enough bitterness to balance, finish is dryish; the aftertaste is initially tangy, but then turns into a flavor similar to aspartame with an acridly bitter undertone
Mouthfeel: medium body, gentle carbonation, a hint of astringency
Overall Impression: The bottle says "Biere artisanale brassee au sirop de Herve". From what I've gathered through a google search, this is a beer made with the syrup from apple and pear trees. I can't say I can pick out anything distinctly apple or pear, but there is an unusual component that must be related to that. It's a pretty good beer and well-worth trying if you come across it. Apparently, it is distributed by Corman Collins, though my web-search divulged that it is brewed by Vervifontaine. What the truth is, I don't know.
