Had a pint of this during a visit to the Elm City brewpub with friends.

Pour is more or less black but has visible highlights at the bottom. A small beige head quickly turns into a ring and remains that way, not much lace left.

Very hard to get much of anything out of this scent at first, I finally start to get light cocoa, caramel and toasty malts after 10 mins or so.

Despite the weak scent the taste does deliver. Chocolate, sweetened coffee, caramel, light but nice smoky notes present. Just a hint of lager graininess there.

Mouthfeel is smooth with carbonation on the lower end. Light and easy drinking like a proper schwarzbier.

Though it has its faults, a solid beer that drinks like a light porter, the noticeable smoky hints are a nice touch.

A really nice beer. Dark brown, almost black, with a thin head. It had a nice roasted grain, coffee aroma, but also something fruity and sweet. Sweet taste, with like a French roast coffee taste, and just a hint of alcohol. I thought it was pretty complex, but maybe that's because I left the growler at room temperature while I had three pints. Anyway, I liked the feel and taste of this beer.

This offering from Elm City pours a devious dark brown almost black with a thick frothy tan head that sticks with this beauty all the way. The aroma is toffee, chocolate, coffee, a bite of herbal faint hoppiness. The taste is so smooth, what a nice winter sipper. This is a style that is a perfect change-up in the winter. The mouthfeel is light and airy, with a gentle carbonation, followed by a crisp roasted bitter bite that balances the malty sweetness found in this beer. This is another good offering from Elm city.

Deep Dark amber in color, decent 1/2" thick head that was gone quickly.

Smell of deep roasty and sweet malts, chocolate and caramel hints.

Taste is a nice complex roasty sweetness, caramel flavor with burnt chocolate.

Feels deep and thick but very smooth, light carbonation.

Pretty dang drinkable. Went very well with the chicken salad.
