.5l bottle into a tulip glass...The beer pours a dark brown with a light tan head, gone pretty quickly, not much lacing at at all...The aroma is super strong its sweet and very alcoholic, there is a ton going on, hard to put my finger on everything a boozy rum and coke, brown sugar, vanilla, christmas smells, lots of coca cola. Way too much going on, its super super weird, almost afraid to drink it, but here we go...The taste is super light, not a good sign for me., super light taste as well. Light herbal notes, close to a Great lakes christmas ale but made with a porter. Not a huge fan of this at all.

Pours opaque with a minimal tan head in my snifter. Malty and molasses nose. Flavor is thick. Just malts on top of malts. Feel is smooth on carbonation and good on the liquid too. Just a damn tasty RIS, which I am assuming it is without looking at the profile for it. Oops. Guessed wrong. It's a porter! And a hearty one at that.

Received from Madsberg/Papsoe last fall, I have no indication that this is retired, rather it was easy for them to find. This porter is very roasted, with sediment towards the last sixth of the 500 ml. Of course it is black. Some coffee and roasted chocolate malt. Medium mouthfeel plus. There was vanilla, it was interesting and one has to be in the mood for interesting to fully appreciate.

Aroma is similar to the regular porter except maybe a bit more smokey. Same levels of roasted malt..mild chocolate, but no hint of the promised vanilla. Body is dark brown to black with a quickly diminishing mocha head. Bitter burnt malts in the fore some faint smokiness and someting that could be vanilla, but could aslo be almond extract. There is a bitter herbal spiciness that runs through the middle into the finish that makes me think the vanilla used might have been an extract. Still it has a nice feel to it (a touch thicker than the regular really) and the base porter is very much like the non-vanilla one I just sampled before.

"Julenatt" means "Christmas Night".

So what do we have here? A vanilla porter? Right.

The colour is very deep brown-black, the liquid is clear and the pale brown foam forms a firm uneven finger thick head with minimal lacing. A large blob of yeast covers the bottom of the bottle.

The smell is… Different. Sweet notes of jellybeans, perfume, vanilla, oak wood, minerals and some roasted malt and a mild bitterness. The “3.0” does not mean “average”, more like “I really don’t know if it is good or bad”.

The taste is not as heavy as I had expected. An artificial candy-like flavour bubbles in the background white a fresh bitter roasted note develops into a milder, sweeter malt (with some chocolate) taste that changes into a very dry stout-like bitterness. The aftertaste got a slight metallic note, but it is mostly a dry, rather anonymous bittersweet quite long lasting flavour that finishes this beer.

The carbonation is gentle with small bubbles.

Not much of vanilla then, more like a “candy porter”. And I am not really convinced.

Revied from notes taken on 8/25/05 that I'm finally getting around to putting in BA.com. Thanks Alekeep and Biergirl, and your Norwegian friends, for sharing these wonderful beers during our Norwegian Beer dinner.

Far and away my favorite beer of the evening and from Nøgne Ø.

Appearance: Dark, thick brown with a big, beige head. Very dark and thick looking.

Smell: Smoky, roasted malts. Char, burnt sugar, caramel, toffee, coffee, roasted meat. Just pure, porter goodness.

Taste: Heavily roasted malt, char and smoke, semi-sweet chocolate, and dark chocolate. Little astringent, nearly crossing over into smoked porter, just on the fringes of porter with a good smokey, chared malt backbone. Must have again with game, steak, or ribs.

Mouthfeel: Chewy, smooth, creamy.

Drinkability: Easily my favorite beer of the night. I would love to have another. In fact when is Alekeep and Biergirl's next trip to Norway?

(Bottle conditioned, 500 ml). The good people of Nøgne Ø have brewed as many as 4 different Yule/Christmas beers for the Yuletide of 2004. "God Jul" and "Julesnadder" are continued from last year with revised recipes, new ones are "Underlig Jul" and this one, their vanilla porter "Julenatt" (= Yule/Christmas Night). Black colour, thick tan head. Aroma of vanilla, roasted malts, hot chocolate and dark fruits. Flavour is rather sweet, dominant vanilla, roasted malts, coffee and plenty of chocolate. A roast and hop bitterness make the aftertaste tolerable. Nice for a change of pace, a decent "dessert beer" for those with a sweet tooth. But like I said in my rating of another vanilla beer: "there’s probably a reason most beers DON’T smell and taste strongly of vanilla". I’m not a big vanilla fan, but for those who don’t mind, this is probably as good as it gets.
