500 ml bottle, from Vinmonopolet Sauda. ABV is 10%, IBU 35. Pitch black colour, large to moderate tan head. Aroma of roast malts, chocolate and coffee, also notes of orange peel, liquorice, cardamom and vanilla. Warming mouthfeel. The flavour is distinctly spicy, with the same elements as the aroma. Sweet, some notes of brown sugar, but not too much. Moderate but noticeable bittering hops.

The lable describes it as 'a good companion by the fireplace' and maybe that's a useful phrase as we head deeper into winter-warmer season.
L- Pours silently like engine oil, which it happens to strongly resemble too. Fleeting dark brown foam cap, nil surprise it's fletting at 10%.
S- Intriguing, like a dark Terry's Chocolate Orange that's been doused in spiced brandy?
T- Briefly a bit medicinal in a way, super-rich then boom into licorice. Quite deep charred smokey notes follow. I divine the orange in the finish where some of the less full-on notes get given a chance to come through...
F- Syrupy viscosity rather than taste, don't serve over-chilled it *really* opens up as it warms a bit (bottle says serve at 12C). Feels like a full-on winter-warmer. It's so pungent it feels beyond 10%... Flipside: don't linger too long, hard for me as it's a slow-sipper, as as it's continues warming it's a risk of tasting OTT strong.
O- I expect you need to be well on-board with very bold statements, plus licorice which is unusually prominent here. One of the most pungent beers I recall since enjoying some beasts (up around 13-15%) of Icelandic stout up in those parts a year ago. Do not plan on registering the taste of anything much after this palate-blitzing beer bar perhaps a full-on vindaloo. Hard to rate as it comes with so much drama. Fascinating to try and I'll certainly finish it, but I'm unlikely to wish to buy this much excitement-in-a-bottle again.
500ml bottle, Bottled 22/08/19 BB: 24/07/2024 £6.35 from TremblingMadness/York for home delivery.
Ingredients incl Molasses, muscovado and demerera sugars, bitter orange peel, liquorice, vanilla and cardamon.
