50 IBU. Maelstrom is a barrel aged Malt Liquor brewed in collaboration with our friends at Bådin. The Cognac and Armagnac barrels have added flavors of overly ripe pineapples and apricots as well as raisins and figs. Notes of umami, leather and tobacco are also present.

A bit boozy bruiser of a beer. Definitely Cognac / Armagnac forward on smell and taste. Malt Liquor in name only as this is more refined and sophisticated than that but the dichotomy is on notice here. Base beer seems almost neutral as the barrel is the showcase here.

330ml brown bottle. Date stamp on label has a bottling date of '19.03.24' with a best by date of sometime in '2034'.
Dirty brown colored body. Thin off white colored head that fizzes away, leaving a thin ring and a minor surface storm. No lacing.
Aroma has a definite alcohol note (brandy-like), also smells of oak, brown sugar, plums, dates, and apricot.
Taste is high alcohol, with vapors that circulate around the mouth. Flavors of oak, plum, date, leather, tobacco, and apricot. Brings a general earthiness. Short lived aftertaste, with more vapors.
More than medium mouthfeel. Smooth and sticky texture. There is more sweetness than bitterness. Appropriate harshness from the higher ABV%. Quiet carbonation.
Each sip causes my upper lip to curl. Lots of depth for a malt liquor.

330 ml bottle, from Vinmonopolet, Nettbutikken. ABV is 16.0%, IBU 50. Hazy brown colour, minimal and shortlived off-white head. Boozy aroma of oak, brandy, raw alcohol, over-ripe fruits, dark dried fruits, pipe tobacco. The flavour is better, and has notes of armagnac and cognac, oak and dark dried fruits, a hint of tobacco.
