Serving Type: 64 Oz. Growler

A- Clear Dark brown, almost black topped by an off-white bubbly head. Lots of lacing.

S- Sweet butterscotch/caramel, slightly bitter chocolate, and a subtle nutty aroma.

T- Butterscotch/caramel sweetness complimented nicely by chocolate notes and a soft earthy bitterness.

M- Creamy Medium Mouthfeel with low carbonation

O- From what I understand, this is the first batch of this beer under the name "Histrorical Brown Ale" (formerly 104th Regiment) and I have to say that it is quite good. I'm not personally a big fan of Brown Ale's but I could get used to this one. Nice balance of sweetness and bitterness and easy drinking. Hopefully Picaroons decides to bottle this brew once again.

Bottle from the brewery store.
Pours a clear dark brown color with ruby at the edges and a creamy frothy off white head that displays great retention and lace. Aromas of caramel, toffee, and chocolate maltiness with just a hint of butterscotch and earthy hop to balance. The flavor is rich caramel and toffee maltiness with a fair amount of chocolate notes and some earthy hop flavor and minimal bitterness. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a creamy silky mouthfeel. I seem to be a bit better at tolerating diacetyl in darker beers and I kind of enjoyed this one.

Friend brought this back from New Brunswick. From notes.

A - Poured deep amber and bright with good carbonation. One finger of off white head on top left OK lace but no retention.

S - Nutty, malty, butterscotchy.

T - Sweet malt, sugary, sweet, buttery, nutty.

M - Good carbonation, medium body, sweet with nuttiness to finish.

O/D - Decent shot at a brown. Pretty straightforward, but good and along similar lines to what Picaroons have been doing.

Poured from a growler into a pint glass.

A: pours a glossy brown with a minimal amount of head and very little retention, but it looks like a brown ale should.

S: much maltier than I had expected, and there are aspects of roast and some very mild hops scents there as well.

T: roasts and malts sneak in and then the profile smooths out to a decently balanced British ale.

M: medium carbonation and fullness

O: a good effort on this style by Picaroons. Definitely not an American style brown ale, this recipe is a traditional one from the British and the war of 1812. I'd like to see more like this from them.
