Picked up a 12 oz bottle from the Appalachian Vintner 10-28-22 for $7.99. Bottled 12-10-21; consumed 4-12-23.
Beer poured murky brown with a smallish bubble bath head that dissipated immediately.
Nose is weird, you have a trace of the barrel and sweet malts but is taken over by a kind of wet doggish smell. I suspect something has gone wrong.
Taste seems to be fine. Large malt base is further sweetened by the coconut and cocoa. Barrel does come into a play imparting some notes of vanilla and bourbon alcohol. Finishes on the sweeter side of being balanced.
Mouthfeel is large bodied and very smooth.
Overall a weird outcome. Not sure what to make of the off smell.

Appearance: Pours a toffee color with a thin head that fades; minimal lacing
Smell: Toffee, fig, shortbread, vanilla, toasted coconut and almond tones, warmly ensconced with aromatics from the Bourbon barrel
Taste: Toffee forward, with the shortbread and vanilla underneath; hints of toasted coconut and almonds emerge to add complexity; in the mid-palate, the Bourbon makes an impact; the finish is a complex melange
Mouthfeel: Full bodied with low carbonation
Overall: Well the name here sent me to the dictionary but the beer here is a first class Wee Heavy, not a secondary effect
