Copenhagen 25/9 2018. 33l bottle from Vinbørsen. A rider in uniform galloping away on the label. Tag line is "An Unashamedly Strong Winter Warmer". Very British.
Pours clear dark brown with a red hue and a small off-white head. Settles as flimsy thin layer of foam unable to cover the surface of the beer. No lacing.
Aroma is sweet and metallic and not especially intense. Sweet lightly roasted malts, brown sugar, fermented dark fruit. Strong undercurrent of alcohol.
Light carbonation. Medium thick, oily, creamy texture. Slightly sticky.
Flavor is rather sweet followed by moderate bitterness. Aftertaste is sweet. Lingers for quite a while.
Lives up to the tagline without being unpleasantly boozy.

Brown/red color. The head is almost absent. Dried fruits, caramel, and candy sugar in aroma. Same notes with a hint of coffee in a moderately sweet, warming taste. Semidry finish and light bitterness. Decent beer.

330 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Bottle conditioned, ABV is 7.2%. Mahogany coloured beer, big beige head. Vinous aroma, notes of raisins and other dark dried fruits, also hints of caramel. The flavour is fairly malty and moderately sweet (but not as sweet as I expected), with hints of dark dried fruits and caramel again, while the finish is biscuity dry with noticeable hops. Fairly bitter aftertaste.

L- Very dark, clear (pour carefully after resting it), held to a light I can just make out flashes of deep ruby red. Pours with 3mm tan head, that's clearing to lacing.
S- Bready malts with some toastiness and coffee notes.
T- Toasty, complex, puddingy (Brit Xmas pudding), really meaty, into smokey, pungent, slightly sweet finish. 'Wow, that's one heck of a taste journey!'.
F- Now this is what I regard as a proper Winter Warmer. Deep dark and complex, and you know the ABV% is all there. One for slowly supping in front of an open fire.
O- Zero out of place or balance, this is a gem of a Winter Warmer dark ale. There's no question I'll be buying this again.
Bought from BeerOfEurope. 330ml bottle. At £1.83 I think this is very good value. BB: 30-Sep-2020

Notes form Sept.2014. From 2012 Reserve.
Deep red brown, almost black, small tan head soon thins to foamy ring and wisps.
Aroma strong rumy-brandied dried fruit, plum pudding, hints of brown sugar, raisins.
Taste is spicy raisin, dark rum, bark, roasty dark toast and wood/bark finish. Overall, somewhat like a barleywine crossed with imperial stout because of the darker, roastier prune elements. A rich beer.

Bottle conditioned. 7.2% ABV. Gentle hiss upon opening. Pours almost black ruby with a thick tan and lasting head.
Smells of malt and dark autumn fruits. Some Rumtopf and peat.
Initial taste of sweetness is then displaced by a mildly charred malt bitterness. Liquorice discerned. Damson and plum present.
Smooth with a gentle carbonation.
Enjoyed as large flakes of snow fell outside.
Barleywine? More ESA or OA.

ive had this one awhile, so was not sure how it would hold up, didnt realize it was lower abv for the style until i opened it up. still doing just fine several years later, a tad oxidized, but i always find that to be a flattering quality in these english dark ales like this. deep carael color to this one, barely any head on it, but some nice shine and viscosity. sweet malty nose, almost scotch ale-like, with a hint of smoke and deep toasted caramelized grain. honey and brown sugar, cardboard and wood, mild spices, decaying english ale yeast. same thing with the taste, a real tired yeast strain contributes it to it being more of an old ale type, but i like that here, its a cool second layer behind the grain sweetness. notes of raisin and molasses on the finish, a little fresh wood, hickory maybe, like the grill, very autumnal. probably a little more lively and distinctive when fresh, but it has held up pretty well and become super nicely integrated. i have not had nearly enough beer from these guys...
