L- Pours deep chestnut. Low carbonation, thin white head has almost completely disappeared within 10 seconds.
S- Prominent roasty toasty malts.
T- Yes roasty/toasty malts do dominate. It comes over as really pretty sweet, and that doesn't work well for me, I mean sweet rather than rich.
F- Feels like materially more than 4.2%, but that sense seems to have been achieved through the above sweetness.
O- I suspect this might be M+S trying to create the feel of a high ABV% Xmas beer, without putting the mass-market off by it being just that, ie something you might expext from a typical Xmas ale say 6.5-8.5%. The compromise appears to be via higher sweetness which it a bit OTT for me. BBE-Aug/2019.

p.s. As of Autumn 2024 this is still in the shops. I am interested to note it is labelled 'Southwold Brewery' and not a whisper re: Adnams anywhere on the lable.

Bottle. Dark amber. Clear with a thin head. Good lacing.
Mild aroma of malt, dark fruit and hops.
Generic Adnams brewery yeast flavour. Toffee and caramel. Distant hops.
Medium body and carbonation.
Lacks Christmas cheer.

Pours clear chestnut with a creamy, mellow tan head. Aromas of nice spiced notes and sweet ginger. Tastes of a medium to sweet taste of light malt, with caramel, toffee, cinnamon, herbs, lemon, with quite strong bitter hops. Aftertaste of is dry with some caramel rusty bitterness. Overall a Christmas ale I really enjoyed, which is just as well as I got a second bottle as a gift from my mum!

Bottled
Colour body with big bubbled off white head that clings to the edges but has some bald spots in the centre
Smell of malt vinegar , rye bread & sugar soap
flavour is dark fruits, plums and blackberry but not so sweet though there is a hint of molasses but more granary bread and a bitter slightly sour edge
solid mf for the strength but slightly thin for flavour
Not bad but not my idea of either a happy or hoppy Christmas
