I bought this from Marks & Spencer today. I might have previously overlooked it as it sounds as if it might be 'too interesting'. The can is yellow/ochre in colour and the text is the same style and lay-out as the other 330ml cans in the 'Brewed by [X] for Marks & Spencer' range. Curiously the lable states that it is 'Brewed with surplus British M&S bread'. That's a first for me! Furthermore Early Grey tea is added to the fermenting vessel 'to infuse the beer with the citrus flavour of bergamot and the tannins from the tea'. - Maybe now you see why no one else had rated this one yet. This might be a death or glory tasting.
L - Poured into 300ml glass. Pale gold, starts with 5mm white head, clears to lacing.
S - I can smell bergamot, knowing it's there, but it's mild, and milder that I feared. So far so good.
T - Hmmm! It is like a quite 'fresh' pale ale, but it has a zestyness to it, and yet, a solid richness balancing that.
M - As the beer warms up a bit it starts to taste sweeter, which is getting a bit too much for my taste. It is 47Cals/100ml versus their own brand [from Woodforde's Brewery] that's also 5%, and 35Cals/100ml. So that's fully 1/3rd sweeter/'richer', and it does come across. Unless you like sweeter beer I'd suggest drinking this cold and quickly.
O - Very unexpected! I got no trace of the bread, and only the faintest of Bergamot. As a pale ale I was expecting perhaps some quite serious hopping, didn't, and instead found it's later sweetness the element I least enjoyed about it.
BB: 04/2019. Currently included in a wide '4 for 3' offer which is what gave me the final nudge to try it.
