Bottle. Described as Oak Aged Broadside. Deep chestnut with a thick dense light tan head. Some ruby colouration also discerned. Smooth even lacing. Aged six years when drunk.
Vinous aroma. Ever so slight sour notes. Esters present. Dark fruits. Cherry. Complex.
Scrumpy like flavour. Sweet composting fruits . More tart than sour though both are present. The woody barrel flavour is present but subdued.
Boozy feel. Quite unctuous. Quite flat.
A very decent old ale. I'm pleased by the sour/tart notes; it's as an Old Ale should have.

L- Crystal clear ultra-dark ruby brown/black. Pours with 3mm fine pale-tan head.
S- Quite deep pungent cherries, alcohol.
T- Dryer than expected, bright almost slightly sour cherries (....evolves>) into a pronounced fruity sour flourish into the finish. Oh now I get it, the latter 'sourness' is strong ie pungent whisky notes in parallel with the cherries!
F- Dry, meaty, pungent, clear whisky taste, deep and complex.
O- I've had high-end whisky-barrel aged ales before, but this takes it further by the addition of cherries. Both the cherries and whisky clearly come through. Fascinating to find, list here, and get to try this one, but at £5.99 bottle from the brewery shop I'll be interested to see where further reviews of this beer take place.
Fascinating to try it, '6 years in oak [whisky] barrels' no wonder it's $$$, but it might just be a bit pricey + off-piste for me to buy more.
Might suit people who enjoy 1) quality brewery + 2) cherry/kriek beer + 3) whisky barrel aged ales.
330ml flip-off ceramic stoppered bottle. 'BBE: April-2021/010419-15:45' (laser-etched into the glass just below the shoulder of the bottle). Bought from the Adnams shop at the Holkham Estate (x-ref Directory here) at Holkham, Wells-next-the-Sea, Norfolk > where Adnams source much of their barley!
ps Just googled the Adnams site, it lists...
'Aged in ex-bourbon barrels with some cherries inside, this limited edition beer is a taste explosion of oak, cherries, whisky and a touch of rhubarb. Sorry, this item is currently unavailable'. < The Holkham Estate shop might be the last chance for Adnams exotica fans! And for the story behind it see the 'Adnams Both Barrels 2019 vintage' article on the Adnams site https://www.adnams.co.uk/articles/adnams-both-barrels-2019-vintage.htm

'Well there I was'... two years after first trying this beer, stood in the sparkly new Adnams shop I'd just come upon by chance in Norwich city centre. I picked up several (c6?) new Adnams beers I've never seen before and this one. I vaguely recognised it's name but wasn't sure, so I bought it anyway. 330ml flip-top bottle £5.99. BB: Feb-2023.
I did the L/S/T+F again before re-reading my original review; there's nothing in the latter that merits amending. Something different. A little too tart/sour (and £!) for me to make a regular but very interesting to try.
