A great tasting pale amber beer, with a light floral/citrus aroma, gentle caramel notes and a good level of bitterness. Brewed with Pale Ale, Crystal, Black and Munich malts which are toasted to add more flavour. Fergus and the brewing team have used Chinook and Cascade hops to add bitterness to balance out the sweetness. They’ve selected malts that are lower in starch, reduced the amount of yeast in the brew and also fermented at a lower temperature in order to keep all the great flavours of Sole Star and to minimise the alcohol content.

Adnam's used to brew a version of lower alcohol Sole Star at 2.7%, this now has been discontinued and replaced with an unquestionably low-alcohol version with an ABV of 0.9%. The bottle I have was bought from the Adnam's shop, on the Holkham Estate in Norfolk, that estate being where Adnams source much of their barley (and other cereals).
Before opening this one, just for the record, I'm a solid fan of Adnams, but I am not yet pursuaded that a 0.9% beer, even by them, is going to do much at all for me - we shall see.
L- For some reason 0.9%ABV suggests to me something light looking but this is dark chestnut, clear and pours with a 2mm pale tan head.
S- More smell than expected, primarily malt-loaf plus a hint of stewed fruits. Better than feared so far, but here goes...
T- Ooh, it's strikingly bitter, dry and very toasty. But the low ABV% is plain to note in the flavour.
F- The low ABV% leaves a major gap in the feel, it seems that is inevitable. In it's place is a dry/bitter/toasty flavour reresenting the other side of the spectrum, and perhaps coming over a bit too heavily.
O- I don't know, is it even equitable to rate a 0.9% beer against a more standard ABV% ale? Or, at a greater extreme, my next beer in the fridge is an 8.5% Fuller's Golden Pride, I cannot see how the tasting experie nce of this beer could ever hope to compete with this latter big hitter. I look forward to later dropping back in to the ratings for this beer and hopefully reading how other BA-heads more familiar with LA% beer have found this one.
500ml bottle, £1.49 BBE: October-2019 (I've just noticed that, it implies this lower ABV% version has been in production for at least a year, and perhaps almost two).
