S.L. Gregory's Dark Mild Ale

Appearance: Pours a clear, very dark, reddish-brown body topped with a layer of beige foam.

Smell: Nutty, sweetish dark malts mixed with a distant note of fruit and a lonely drop of carob.

Taste: Upfront maltiness presents a taste of burnt toasted with a slight nuttiness and a slightly sweet taste of carob. Minor hint of fruit. A subdued, discreet roasty bitterness. Finishes dry with a light, lingering roasted quality.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light body. Medium-low carbonation.

Drinkability: I would like to know the ABV% on this one, City Brewing! Though it's certainly not a member of the upper echelon of fantastic milds, it's still a decently drinkable, light, malty beer.

A- Pours a 1 finger tan fluffy head. The body is very dark brown/black with only ruby shades showing through light. There is a VERY fine sediment in the body of the beer. There isn't much for lacing.

S- A nice dark fruitiness comes through on the nose with some powdered chocolate, a hint of cherries, as well as a fresh flour component. There is a hopiness deeper down but it is well balanced.

T- Starts with a malty, almost dextrine like smoothness with notes of dark chocolate, mild dark fruits, some nutiness, touch of sweet breadiness and then the finish is slightly dry but retains a bit of the chocolate notes in the beer.

M- Very smooth mouthfeel and very limited carbonation as per style.

D- I'm not sure of the percent, but I think I could session these. I hope to see more of these in the future.

This beer pours a dark mahogany color with a one inch light tan head which recedes slowly into thick lacing. The aroma is nutty, creamy, and lightly roasty. The taste is a lot like the aroma. It begins nutty and roasty, and finishes with a lingering creamy aftertaste. The mouthfeel is on the lighter side of medium bodied, as it should be for the style. It is slightly over carbonated for the style though, and that seems to take away from the flavor a little. Overall, this is a real surprise fron City Brewing Company. It is very much to style being light enough to session, and flavorful enough to be interesting. I could easily drink this again.

Note that this beer claims to be brewed by Universal Sales in Lacrosse. I suspect that it is brewed by City Brewing for this company.

Looks pretty damn good. Big three finger pale tan head, decent retention on this dark brown ale that looks much like a porter. Leaves a fair amount of sticky lace that breaks down into intricate webbing.

Aroma consists mainly of creamy nuts with a hint of cocoa powder, as well as a slight hint of leafy english hops.

Taste is much like the aroma, although some roasted character does come through in the finish, making this much like a light brown porter.

Quite creamy in feel, has a very solid mouth presence for what is little more than a light bodied ale. Lots of flavour in here, despite the fact that this is obviously a low gravity brew. Fairly low level of carbonation.

A brew made for sessioning something with real flavours. Seems pretty well made, and complies with the guidelines for the style. Recommended for fans of the style as well as brown porters. Mild metallic quality mildly impairs my ability to quaff this brew. Hope to see this around again, as i would likely make another purchase.
