A 330ml bottle with a BB of Feb 2018. Acquired recently from Home Bargains. The label describes it as an amber ale brewed with rose leaves and hips and hopped with Nelson Sauvin and Pacific Gem.
A: Poured into a tulip. A deep reddish-amber hue with good clarity and moderate carbonation. Produces a decent head of creamy white foam that lasts for a minute or two before reducing and dissipating entirely.
S: Aroma of caramel malt with hints of mild grain, subtle barley sugar, ale yeast, vague stewed leaves and a faint jammy fruitiness. OK but not very distinctive.
T: Tastes of caramel malt with notes of subtle grain, a hint of barley sugar, ale yeast, stewed leaves/husks, a twinge of fruitiness and touch of solvent in the background. Slightly sweet, with a delicate leafy bitterness upon swallowing.
M: Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, with light carbonation and decent body for the strength. Aftertaste of caramel malt, barley sugar, ale yeast, stewed leaves and a faint fruitiness.
O: So-so; rather bland. Looks OK, while the aroma and flavour are decidedly malt-driven with hints of yeast, leaves and a touch of fruit. Subtle off-notes in the background. Body is alright. Can't say that the rose leaves or hips put in much of an appearance - there's just the vaguest indication of something extra in this beer. The NZ hops are also nowhere to be found. Not terribly noteworthy; no need to seek it out.
