Tasted by half-pint at the Evening Star, Brighton, 09/09/06. It was kindly pointed out by Seamus that I'd better try it before this one-off brew was gone, then Karen (Mrsbeerymatt) added that the beer is perhaps brewed with cacao beans rather than chocolates. Cheers to both of them! Served on a handpump.
A: nearly black, with a thin off-white foamy head. Can't see through the beer but I presume the carbonation is pretty "quiet".
S: bitter and burned edge of caramel, roastiness of coffee beans and very subdued chocolatey notes. Pleasant but somehow not as complex as other Dark Star's special stouts/porters.
T: more coffee beans than cacao beans here on the palate~~ the flavour is pretty mixed and reasonably complex, showing mainly coffee-ish bitterness skirted by a touch of toffee-ish sweetness and faint roasty kick, while vanilla-ish dark chocolates develops quietly at the back and mixed pretty well with the hop bitterness. The finish sees a lingering roasty-bitter crescendo that really is soothing, satisfying and never OTT.
M&D: clean palate, to my surprise, and the mouthfeel is pretty much in line with British dark ales, smooth and slightly chewy without much undesirable fizziness; overall this medium-bodied chocolate beer successfully pushes the envelope of Dark Star's range, and is smoother than its own Espresso Stout. Worth a try if one could find it, and I do hope they will make it a regular in the near future.
